After having played the character of Ramsay Bolton on Game of Thrones, actor Iwan Rheon has moved on to something more thought-provoking. Iwan took part in the creation of a short animated film, in collaboration with Studio La Plage. The film, in which Iwan recorded a voice over, aims to be informative and educational with scientific imagery and visual representations of the human side of dementia to explain what the condition is and how it impacts lives.
The animation explains dementia and the misconceptions surrounding it to create a better awareness about the condition, which 850,000 people across the UK today. Iwan, who lost his grandmother to Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia in 2008, talks about how it affected her strong personality and how they dealt with it.
“It all happened so quickly, and got to the point where she couldn’t live by herself anymore and unfortunately she had to be sectioned,” he said. “At times she would become really confused, thinking I was her husband. At first it was kind of funny – you have to try and laugh through these things – but she eventually deteriorated to the point she didn’t know who we were or where she was. It was pretty hardcore.”
Iwan is really proud to have been a part of this campaign, and hopes that it will help people affected with dementia all over.
“I’m proud to have played a small part in the project, and hope people will share this animation as far and wide as possible to improve understanding of this devastating condition,” he said.
