These are the desperate and unprecedented times for mankind. Nothing has quite affected people and countries like Coronavirus has done. Almost all the countries across the globe are in lockdown which means more people are at home than at any stage in history. That also means most of those people are turning to Television and other streaming mediums for their entertainment. Cheryl Idell, Chief Research Officer, WarnerMedia Entertainment & Direct-to-Consumer has recently shared some interesting statistics about the recent resurgence in viewership. Read on!
Idell recently wrote an article on Medium and gave the news that overall U.S. TV viewing (traditional + connected devices + smart TV) grew by nearly 20% across the industry last week. She also wrote that this increase in viewership kept on getting more prominent throughout the week.
Westworld whose latest season started airing recently remained the number 1 show on the platform. HBO’s blockbuster Game of Thrones which completed its run last year too showed the spike of over 50 percent as per the latest data. Viewership was never quite an issue for Thrones and its quite wonderful to see it still garnering audiences. Big Little Lies and Chernobyl too showed similar growths.
With more time in hand, people seem to be turning nostalgic as well as HBO’s legacy series like The Wire, The Sex And The City and The Sopranos too showed significant upturns. Movies like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and X-Men: Dark Phoenix too saw the rise in viewerships.
People also turned towards movies like Contagion which has seen a phenomenal rise in interest across the globe. The movie was based on the spread of a virus and viewers seem to be relating to it big time. HBO’s documentary Ebola: The Doctor’s Story also showed 7 times more viewership than past weeks.
All of the above data suggests that there is enough content available for people to stay entertained and they are having a good time as well. However, it is still going to be a long haul and it’s important that networks and streaming sites maintain the viewer’s interests.

Superhero shows and movies are ruling the current trend of the fantasy genre. The audience all over the world is thrilled to see their favourite superheroes finally on the big screen. No wonder the fan following for this genre is so massive. The WandaVision finale premiered on Friday. Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner took to Instagram and deemed it as the ‘best show on TV.’
Turner, who has herself played a superhero in the past (X-Men’s Dark Phoenix), was in full support of the Marvel TV series. While some applauded Marvel Studios for how the show addressed Scarlet Witch’s grief, many were disappointed that the series finale didn’t feature any surprise cameos by the Avengers or the X-Men. They also felt ‘robbed’ after the truth behind Evan Peters’ Quicksilver was revealed. However, Sophie Turner doesn’t feel the same. She took to her Instagram Stories and shared her thoughts in a video. “WandaVision is the best show on TV, and anyone can fight me about it… because I’ll fight you,” she said.

Mental health is often an overlooked aspect of today’s fast-paced life. It is often hard for people to open up about mental issues. Truth be told, it is often seen as a weakness. This is the reason why most people refrain from seeing a therapist. Those who open up face judgemental behaviour and are trolled by their peers. Recently, Meghan Markle was ridiculed all over the internet for opening up about feeling suicidal in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner stood up to her defence.
Sophie shared a viral message on Instagram. About those saying that they don’t believe Meghan when she opened up about how she was suicidal. She needed help for her mental health while she was in London. “Meghan Markle probably isn’t going to see your negative comments saying you don’t believe that she was suicidal… but your friends and family who have been in the past will, and they’ll never come to you for help. Don’t be that person,” the message read.
Meghan said during the interview that the heavy racist vitriol from the UK press. The lack of support from the Buckingham Palace staff and family, led her to a dark place, mentally.
Recently, Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke was seen supporting the NHS workers. What do you think about Meghan Markle’s interview? Tell us in the comments below!
Human beings have evolved over time to pursue their goals relentlessly. As the generations passed, many of our goals became money-oriented. Some others craved power, and gradually greed consumed most of humankind in one way or other. In today’s fast pacing world, we rarely make time for our family, let alone save some time for ourselves. Humanity is slowly losing touch with its emotions. This often leads to mental illnesses of one form another. Game of Thrones star Kristofer Hivju is trying to address the same issue.
