Game of Thrones actor Aiden Gillen talks about Littlefinger’s weakness for Catelyn and Sansa
Game of Thrones has a lot of brilliant characters, with most of them relying on their swords to get the job done. However, it has always been said that the real Game of Thrones is between Lord Varys, and Littlefinger (Petyr Baelish), who are two of the smartest characters on the show, getting things done exactly the way they want. While Varys, being a eunuch, is a man with no carnal desires, Littlefinger has always been drawn to the Stark women, Catelyn first, and then Sansa. Aiden Gillen, who plays the role of Littelfinger on the show, recently talked about this, and more about his character. Read on!
In a recent interview with Irish Central, Aiden Gillen talked about quite a few things, like his upcoming projects, Game of Thrones, and his Irish heritage. When asked if being Irish had helped him portray Littlefinger, he said :
“I haven’t thought about that one in that way. I know the Irish did use language, as did any oppressed people.
But I don’t want to get into 800 years of oppression, I really don’t, and I’ve never really thought about it in terms of Game of Thrones. The thing about Baelish is that he definitely is an outsider and he has worked his way up and out of his class and into the higher echelons of the courts. He is very much still an outsider though, and he’s still pretending to be something that he’s not.”
Aiden was then asked whether Catelyn and Sansa ‘exposed’ Littlefinger’s heart. He responded :
“I don’t know that it’s been exposed. I think we see a little bit of that. I think we saw a little of it with Sansa and her mother Catelyn Stark.
He’d be a little less guarded. The one weakness that he has, the one era where he could be exposed or trip up is the emotional one regarding Sansa or Catelyn. But it hasn’t really been an issue. He hasn’t slipped up.”
We all remember how Littlefinger’s decision to leave Sansa with Ramsey Bolton turned out to be a mistake. Aiden was asked if he knew what kind of man Bolton was. He replied :
“No, I don’t. I think he should have known. But it would just have been beyond cruel and also it would have been stupid. It’s unlikely that he would have planned that. He did put her in this place and he should have been smarter about it.”
