The Walking Dead won’t surpass source material like Game of Thrones did, say producers

As most of you know, Game of Thrones is based on the series of novels by George R. R. Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire. While George is still writing the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, hopefully coming out this year, the TV show, on the other hand, is set to premiere Season 7 this year, and the story has already surpassed the story of the books, and Season 7 will further widen the gap, since the next book probably will not be released until after it finishes airing.

This had been foreseen for a long time, considering George was, and still is, writing at his own pace, and the show has the obligation to maintain the pace of delivery, something which George doesn’t face with the books. It now seems that the other ongoing show that carries a hype similar to Game of Thrones, AMC’s The Walking Dead, will not meet the same fate in surpassing the story. Read on!

The Walking Dead is based on an ongoing comic book series, and everybody has been wondering if the show will surpass the source material like Game of Thrones did. A new interview by The Hollywood Reporter with the showrunner of The Walking Dead, Scott M. Gimple, had him saying that he doesn’t see this happening. He said :

“With some plans we have for the future, I don’t think so. I think it’s unlikely, but it depends where the book stops.”

The creator of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, who also serves as a producer on the show, seems to agree, too. He said :

“I don’t know if anyone sat down to do the math, but if the show is gaining on the comic book, it’s at a very slow pace. We’re expanding storylines so every now and then we zip through the comic book, and then we slow down for a while and add a bunch of stuff that’s not in the comics. There’s not any danger of that happening in any way.”

Although, whether that’s a good thing for the show or not is something we can’t decide. Game of Thrones has been doing well off-book, but that doesn’t mean that The Walking Dead will, too. The recently aired Season 7 received underwhelming reviews, and ratings. While the producers seem to talk about going off-book as a bad thing, The Walking Dead probably needs just that to survive, especially because the show doesn’t seem to carry its pace as well as Game of Thrones does.

What do you think? Will The Walking Dead do as good a job going off-book as Game of Thrones, if it ever decides to?
