Game of Thrones is a massive franchise, and we have seen a lot of businesses jump on the bandwagon and use Game of Thrones to grab themselves some promotion time. Now, over the years, quite a few official tie-ups with the show have been seen, but the latest one is quite a breath of fresh air, mostly because it doesn’t seem like something that would go well with the theme of the show.Major League Baseball has now partnered up with HBO, for a Game of Thrones themed cross-promotional gig that will involve at least 19 teams.
Promotional offerings have been said to involve co-branded merchandise, ticket packages, giveaways, theme nights, and social media events, and will come in different flavors on a team by team basis.
MLB’s EVP of Business Noah Garden, while talking to Deadline, said they went for this deal because they have “had a longstanding partnership with HBO.” HBO Now is based on MLB’s BAMTech platform. He also promised a “tremendous amount of tie-ins, not to mention what’s going to happen locally with each club.”
He also mentioned that none of them have an idea about when Season 7 of Game of Thrones will premiere. They seem to be targeting the younger demographic with this campaign. Garden said :
“What people fail to look at when it comes to MLB is that we were the first to stream our games online and the first to launch an app — long before any other sport did. Our millennials went to those platforms right away….The curse is that it gave the perception to some that we’ve become an older sport, which really couldn’t be farther from the truth.”
The teams that will be a part of this promotional campaign are Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, Los Angeles Dodgers, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins, Oakland Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays and Washington Nationals.
Game of Thrones will air in summer, this year, specifically in July, according to a not-very-official report. In the meantime, Major League Baseball has already begun with March madness, and will go through till October, which means that it will cover the air time of Game of Thrones Season 7.
