Game of Thrones is now running way past the books, so it is clear that the showrunners know how it’s going to end. So far until season 5, the books provided key points that were directly adapted into the show, but as season 6 came out, it was obvious that it is no longer relying on the books. At such a time, Robert Kirkman, the creator of ‘The Walking Dead’, in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, said that he was of the opinion that George R.R. Martin should not have revealed the ending to the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Weiss and Benioff had once spoken about how George R. R Martin had sat down and told them all the important plot details that would lead to the eventual end of Game of Thrones, which included 3 huge shocking moments from the books. Kirkman believes that Martin, who is yet to conclude The Winds of Winter, should have let the showrunners come up with their own ending for the show. Speaking about how he was disappointed that Martin gave away the crucial plot points to the producers, and how he, Kirkman, would not reveal to the producers the end of his comic(which he says he’s already planned) the Walking Dead, he said, “I would never do that. That’s the one thing I’m disappointed in George R.R. Martin for doing. He should have just been like, ‘F**k you. You make it up now, I’ll get to mine when I’m ready.'”
It is safe to say that Kirkman firmly believes that Weiss and Benioff should have been left to prepare an ending without the guidance of Martin.
What do you think George R.R Martin should have done?
