Daenerys Targaryen recreated the “Field of Fire” in the latest Game Of Thrones episode, “The Spoils of War”
The latest Game Of Thrones episode, The Spoils of War gave us an extremely satisfying battle sequence, which is on par with the Battle of the Bastards or the battle with the dead in the Hardhome episode. Daenerys has suffered a series of defeats and Cersei has outsmarted Tyrion since the beginning of this season and now Daenerys is left with no allies (Jon still hasn’t bent the knee). As a result, in the latest episode, Daenerys ignored Tyrion’s advice and did what she wanted to do and her plan involved the Dothraki and a Dragon!
The Lannisters, who were extremely happy after defeating and looting the Tyrells, were returning to King’s Landing and that’s when they were stunned by a surprise attack by the Dothraki, lead by Daenerys on Drogon and it soon turned into a carnage with Drogon roasting alive Daenerys’ enemies and even destroying the wagons that were carrying the loot from Highgarden. With that, Daenerys recreated the Field of Fire, which was an important battle during Agon Targaryen‘s conquest of Westeros.
Ironically, the field where Aegon annihilated his enemies is located in the Northern part of the Reach, which is somewhere closer to the place where Daenerys attacked the Lannisters. Another important thing to remember is that Aegon and his army fought against the armies of House Lannister and House Gardner, who were the Kings of the Reach, with Highgarden being their seat. However, the Targaryens wiped out the Gardners and their steward Harlen Tyrell handed over Highgarden to Aegon Targaryen and Aegon rewarded Harlen by making him the Lord of Highgarden.
This is very similar to what has happened in this season, as Randyll Tarly, who was a bannerman of House Tyrell, sided with the Lannisters after he was offered the title of Warden of the South and together they wiped out House Tyrell. Also, both the events involved House Lannister and a powerful house from the Reach.
During Aegon’s conquest, Loren I Lannister, who was the King of the Rock and Mern IX Gardener, the King of the Reach joined their forces to fight against the Targaryen invaders and they had a strong army of around 55,000 men, which was 5 times larger than the Targaryen army. However, Aegon and his sisters had 3 dragons, Balerion, Meraxes and Vhagar and together they set on fire the dry field and killed more than 4000 men, with more than 10,000 men suffering burns, while the Targaryens lost only 100 men and Visenya was injured as she was struck by an arrow.
There were a lot of parallels between both the battles as Daenerys and her army attacked the Lannisters and the Tarlys, and Daenerys used Drogon to set the field on fire and burned to death many soldiers, thus defeating her enemies. Also, Visenya had taken an arrow to her shoulder, and this time it was Drogon who was taken down by Bronn with the huge arrow that was designed by Qyburn.
The Field of Fire had a huge impact as it showed the Kings of Westeros how powerful the Dragons were and when Torrhen Stark, the King in the North learned about the Field of Fire, he decided that it was wise to bend the knee, rather than leading his men to a certain doom. Daenerys’ Field of Fire might have a similar impact on the Lords of Westeros and we might get to see people joining her side in the war against Cersei Lannister.
