Everything We Know About Seasmoke in House of the Dragon
The dragon of Addam Velaryon.
House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones are both iconic shows set in the world created by George R. R. Martin. The lore of Westeros and the Targaryen dynasty offers a rich history, with dragons playing a major role in both series.
Dragons were the main focus of the Targaryen Civil War known as the Dance of the Dragons. This war saw dragons fight against each other when House targaryen was split into two factions, the greens and the Blacks. One of the dragons of the Blacks was Seasmoke, originally ridden by Ser Laenor Velaryon, the husband of Rhaenyra Targaryen. After Ser Laenor, Seasmoke was ridden by Addam of Hull. This article covers everything we know about Seasmoke in both the show and the books.

Quick Details
Who is Seasmoke?
Seasmoke is a pale silver-grey dragon known for his speed and agility. He was bonded with Ser Laenor Velaryon, who named him his “pride and passion.” Seasmoke played an important role in the Battle of the Stepstones, where he and Laenor aided Prince Daemon during the siege of Bloodstone. Despite Laenor’s departure to Essos, Seasmoke remained in Westeros, riderless and unclaimed, making him an important asset in the ongoing conflict of House of the Dragon.
Seasmoke was depicted in a unique design, differing from the other dragons in the House of the Dragon. However, his design is reminiscent of Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion from Game of Thrones. His notable traits include his pale silver-grey scales and light green eyes. While still young, he was a nimble and powerful dragon, capable of outmaneuvering older and larger dragons.

House of the Dragon: Season 1
Seasmoke appeared in the first season of House of the Dragon, where Ser Laenor Velaryon rode him into battle during the War for the Stepstones. The dragon played a crucial role in the siege of Bloodstone, where he helped save Prince Daemon from being surrounded by Triarchy soldiers.
Later in Season 1, Seasmoke accompanied Laenor to King’s Landing on the day of his wedding to Rhaenyra. He remained at High Tide during Laena Velaryon’s funeral and stayed in Driftmark after Laenor faked his death and left for Essos. Seasmoke was left riderless, and his future role remained uncertain by the end of the season.
House of the Dragon: Season 2
In Season 2, Seasmoke’s story picks up as a new rider is introduced: Addam of Hull. Seasmoke is seen roaming Driftmark, unclaimed and restless. Addam, who is tasked with taming the dragon, faces the challenge of earning Seasmoke’s trust. After several attempts by other would-be riders, Seasmoke rejects them, signaling that he has chosen Addam as his new rider.
The relationship between Seasmoke and Addam intensifies as the dragon becomes a central part of the conflict. Seasmoke and Addam join forces with Rhaenyra and her forces, flying to Harrenhal to secure allegiance from the lords of the Riverlands. They become essential to Rhaenyra’s cause, marking a significant moment in Season 2.
In the Books
During the Dance of the Dragons
In the books, Seasmoke’s story is intertwined with Addam of Hull, introduced during the Dance of the Dragons. Addam, a bastard of the Velaryon family, bonds with Seasmoke during the Red Sowing, where various aspirants attempt to tame riderless dragons. Addam’s brother Alyn of Hull is nearly attacked by the wild dragon Sheepstealer, prompting Addam to mount Seasmoke and drive away the dragon. This marks the beginning of their partnership.
Seasmoke plays a significant role in the battle during the Dance of the Dragons. As a powerful dragon, he fights alongside Addam against the Triarchy during the Battle of the Gullet. He also participates in the Fall of King’s Landing, where he defends the city in the Dragonpit after the Velaryons’ betrayal and the shift of power between the two factions.
Seasmoke’s Death and Legacy
Seasmoke’s end comes during a battle with the dragon Vermithor. After Addam flees with the dragon, Rhaenyra calls for his arrest, believing him to be a traitor. Addam, however, manages to gather support and fights in the Battle of Tumbleton. Seasmoke, alongside Addam, faces off against Vermithor, but the dragon is defeated after a brutal aerial battle.
In the chaos of the battle, Seasmoke is slain by Vermithor, his head torn off, and Tessarion, another dragon, is also mortally wounded. Seasmoke’s death marks the end of his legacy, but his fierce participation in the battles of the Dance of the Dragons is remembered. His remains, along with Vermithor’s, serve as a memorial in Tumbleton.
