Since 1996, George R.R. Martin has been crafting his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, but the final two volumes remain unfinished. The Winds of Winter, the eagerly awaited next installment, has been in progress for over a decade. Despite growing impatience among fans, Martin recently shared an update on its development.

Quick read:

  • George R.R. Martin is committed to finishing The Winds of Winter, which has been in progress for over a decade.
  • He admitted distractions from adaptations but emphasized his control over the book’s completion.
  • Martin aims to ensure quality in future adaptations despite mixed results from past projects.

George R.R. Martin is busy completing The Winds of Winter

There have been many questions about The Winds of Winter hitting the shelves any time soon. Though Martin has repeatedly assured fans, they doubt if he’s staying true to his goal, especially if he gets distracted with so many new adaptations. In an interview with Collider, the Game of Thrones author said,

“There’s always the books, and I’m aware of that people think that— But no, I have to get back. I have to finish the books. That’s the one thing I’m completely in control of. There are no budget limitations. There are no other executives on the studio side that I have to please, or other writers with different views. The books are what I’m going to make them. And, I think the one I’m writing is coming pretty well, but I wish it would come faster. I have to finish the books.”

How adaptations can be a hit or miss

George R.R. Martin’s last adaptation, In The Lost Lands, wasn’t exactly a hit. Despite starring heavy hitters like Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista, the film did abysmal at the box office and was critically panned. Martin reasoned in the interview,

“You try to make the story as good as it can be, and some fans will like it, some fans will not like it. You’re always going to get criticism, but you’ve got to keep trying. You’ve got to try to do everyone the best it can possibly be.

Though Martin understands there are limitations to what can be adapted from a written material, there is a limit to how far he’s willing to go. And he doesn’t hesitate to take a stand, like he did in the case of House of the Dragon. Do you think his upcoming adaptations will do better? Tell us in the comments below!
