The wait for The Winds of Winter feels like an eternity—so much so that fans have started joking that even dire wolves, extinct for thousands of years, have managed a comeback before George R.R. Martin’s next book. And honestly? They might not be entirely wrong. Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi – are real-life dire wolves that were born before Martin’s book.

The Dire Wolves Return… Before The Winds of Winter

While George R.R. Martin continues his meticulous crafting of The Winds of Winter, dire wolves have made their own surprise return—this time, through science. Colossal Biosciences has successfully brought back three genetically engineered dire wolf-like pups: Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi.

Martin was ecstatic about the return of the Stark sigil beasts. He wrote on his blog, Not A Blog:

“Welcome to Direwolf Day. I’ve been holding my tongue for months now, sworn to silence yet dying to tell the world. Pardon my shouting, but…

THE DIREWOLF IS BACK.
Extinct for more than ten thousand years, but extinct no longer, thanks to Ben Lamm, George Church, Beth Shapiro, and the rest of their team of mad scientists at Colossal, the world leader in the science of “de-extinction.”

I met them all in February, in… well, that would be telling. And I met Romulus and Remus too. Here’s me and Romulus. (Or maybe Remus. They’re twins, and hard to tell apart.)”
