Peter Jackson is the new owner of Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne
Peter Jackson adds Game of Thrones’ Iron Throne to his pop culture memorabilia collection

The Iron Throne, the ultimate symbol of power in HBO’s Game of Thrones, has found a new ruler—none other than Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. The legendary filmmaker was revealed as the mystery bidder who secured the iconic prop during a high-profile auction a few months ago, spending a staggering $1.49 million to claim the throne.
Quick read:
- Peter Jackson bought the Iron Throne at a recent Game of Thrones auction for $1.49 million.
- It suits his fantasy legacy, joining his collection as the Lord of the Rings director.
- His ownership was revealed when biotech company Colossal Biosciences used it in a dire wolf promo.
A Throne Fit for a Filmmaker
After Game of Thrones concluded in 2019, various props and memorabilia from the series were put up for auction, drawing immense interest from fans and collectors alike. Among the most coveted items was the 330-pound Iron Throne, used in promotional events for the show. The auction, held last October, saw intense bidding, but Jackson emerged victorious, securing the throne for his personal collection.
Jackson’s love for epic fantasy storytelling made him a fitting owner of the throne. His Lord of the Rings trilogy set the benchmark for cinematic fantasy, much like Game of Thrones did for television. His acquisition of the throne adds another legendary artifact to his collection, further cementing his status as a titan of the fantasy genre.

A Surprising Reveal
Jackson’s ownership of the throne remained a secret until recently, when biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences used it in a promotional campaign for their groundbreaking dire wolf de-extinction project. The company, which aims to revive extinct species, flew two genetically engineered dire wolf pups—Romulus and Remus—to Dallas, Texas, for a photoshoot atop the Iron Throne. It was during this reveal that Jackson’s involvement came to light, surprising fans and sparking excitement across the internet.
With the throne now in Jackson’s possession, fans can only wonder how he plans to showcase this legendary piece of television history. Will it become a centerpiece in his collection, or will it make an appearance in a future project? Only time will tell.
