Matt Smith says filming House of the Dragon isn’t easy because of the scale of the show
House of the Dragon impressed fans and Matt Smith with its grand budget

Matt Smith, the versatile and talented actor, keeps captivating audiences with his compelling performances. Currently, he shines as Prince Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s hit series House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones. However, despite his immense experience, he admits House of the Dragon is bigger in scale that he had initially anticipated.
Quick read:
- Matt Smith stars as Prince Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, a challenging and ambitious project.
- The show’s scale, including numerous dragons, made production complex and costly.
- Smith values art that provokes, criticizing oversimplified stories and trigger warnings.
Filming House of the Dragon wasn’t easy
House of the Dragon is one of HBO’s most ambitious projects. The entire scale is much larger when compared to similar fantasy shows. The large number of dragons itself warrants a huge cost, and Matt Smith was bewildered by this. In an interview with the Gentleman’s Journal, Smith said,
“The scale of the show is really big and ambitious. It takes a lot of time to realise all of the elements. So it’s not easy, but it’s a good challenge, and it’s nice to be working at home; at least I’m not away from everyone for a big chunk of time”.

Matt Smith on “policing” of stories
Matt Smith has established himself across a wide range of genres. In the context of horror, he noted in an earlier interview that oversimplifying storylines for audiences diminishes their intrigue:
“Too much policing of stories and being afraid to bring them out because a climate is a certain way is a shame. I’m not sure I’m on board with trigger warnings. It’s OK to feel uncomfortable or provoked while looking at a painting or watching a play, but I worry everything’s being dialed and dumbed down. We’re telling audiences they’re going to be scared before they’ve watched something.”
