Emma D’Arcy described Matt Smith as a delightful human and a dedicated actor, and that his professionalism and respect for the craft set him apart. D’Arcy shared that Smith’s ability to navigate the rigid filming process while creating space for creativity has been inspiring. D’Arcy highlighted his capacity to fight for creative freedom while respecting the boundaries of the production process. His energy and commitment create a positive environment for collaboration.
Smith’s dedication to trying new things has left a significant impact on D’Arcy. His adventurous spirit aligns with their shared appetite for excitement, making their dynamic on set engaging and enjoyable. D’Arcy said:
“I love that man. We take our work really seriously, but we also have an amazing time working together. I’ve learned so much from him. Honestly, this applies to the entire cast, but with Matt, I’ve learned how he creates space for himself, even when there isn’t any.”
“Shooting something as big as that show, with so many technical elements and long hours, can feel very rigid at times. But Matt understands how vital play is to our work. He’s taught me to fight for that space rather than just take it. It’s amazing to see how he does it, and it was such a joy for me to watch and learn from him.”
Another fascinating aspect of Matt Smith’s personality is his love for 90s erotic thrillers. D’Arcy revealed that Smith’s interest in this genre of films is something they share. This mutual appreciation has strengthened their off-screen bond.
“I loved seeing what excites him, what lights up his imagination, and how he approaches things. He loves trying something new—just say anything fresh during a take, and he’s completely engaged. He thrives on the energy of unpredictability. We both seem to have an appetite for something a little dangerous, and it’s such an exciting dynamic to work within.”
“Oh, and he also loves a good ’90s erotic thriller—a bit of a weird rabbit hole to go down with Matt Smith. Speaking of which, I recently watched Jane Campion’s In the Cut. Meg Ryan is incredible in it—God, what a film. Mark Ruffalo is amazing too. It’s just fantastic.”
