Matt Smith recalls the time when he first met George R.R. Martin and the cast of Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones fans are all hyped about the upcoming prequel House of The Dragon. The official trailer received plenty of positive views, and the recent World Premiere was attended and praised by some of the most renowned critics. A similar hype was generated when the original show, Game of Thrones was going to air on HBO for the first time in 2011, and House of The Dragon star Matt Smith was famous as the eleventh incarnation of Doctor Who at the time. And that’s when Smith met the highly coveted author for the first time.
Smith recalled the incident in a recent interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, saying he had always been a fan of Game of Thrones. He said, “I’ve always been a fan. It’s just good, isn’t it? I remember going to Comic-Con for Doctor Who, and meeting George R.R. Martin on a boat. Game of Thrones hadn’t come out yet, and I remember all the cast being there, having no idea what a huge juggernaut it was about to become…”
Smith’s dream of being on a Game of Thrones set finally came true when he was cast as Daemon Targaryen in the prequel House of The Dragon. However, unlike Game of Thrones, House of The Dragon mainly was shot indoors, though he did get to visit a few exotic locations. He said while he did get to go to Spain and Portugal (“briefly”), he spent most of the shoot “in a shed in Leavesden. It could have been worse. At least it was near my house.”
