George R.R. Martin might be the most revered literary figure of the current generation, but that doesn’t mean he has a 100% success rate. His fame catapulted with the HBO adaptation of Game of Thrones, with more spinoffs down the road. His recent Hollywood adventure, In The Lost Lands, didn’t attract a large audience. But he remains hopeful about a sequel.

Quick details:

  • In The Lost Lands received poor reviews, earning a 17% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • George R.R. Martin and the film’s team are interested in a sequel exploring Grey Alys’ origins.
  • Martin’s initial plan included multiple stories about Grey Alys, sparking hope for further adaptations.

In The Lost Lands’ minuscule reviews

The fantasy film In The Lost Lands, based on George R.R. Martin’s short story, has faced a challenging debut. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista, the movie aimed to bring Martin’s dark, adult fairy tale to life. However, critics have been less than kind, citing a lackluster narrative and underwhelming visual execution. With a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 17% at one point, the film struggled to resonate with audiences despite its intriguing premise and star-studded cast.

George R.R. Martin reportedly wants an In The Lost Lands sequel

Despite the film’s reception, Martin has expressed interest in continuing the story of Grey Alys, the enigmatic sorceress at the heart of the tale. In an interview with GamesRadar+, actress Milla Jovovich said, “I would love to delve more into Grey Alys, and Paul and I talk about it all the time. We’ve talked so much about, like, her origins, and where she came from, and what is the curse, and how did she get it. I mean, there are so many questions.”

Anderson confirmed, “I know George would as well because his original idea was to write a series of Grey Alys stories. So touch wood, this might be the impetus for him to do that. George had written a fairy tale that was dark and was for adults, and that to me was really exciting.”
