George R.R. Martin misses FYC event for House of the Dragon Season 3
Is GRRM expressing his discontent with House of the Dragon?

Things have never been peachy between George R.R. Martin and HBO, and even more so lately. Though both have benefitted immensely from each other’s works, Martin has been more on the critical side of recent adaptations. As a perfectionist, the Game of Thrones author likes things to be done a certain way. Which might be one of the reasons why he decided not to attend the recent For Your Consideration panel event with the House of the Dragon cast members.
Quick read:
- George R.R. Martin criticized House of the Dragon Season 2, citing deviations from his book.
- His absence at the recent FYC panel raised questions about tensions with HBO.
- Despite differences, their collaboration continues.
George R.R. Martin didn’t attend the FYC panel
This year, House of the Dragon had a panel at the Emmys For Your Consideration event, which was attended by Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Queen Alicent Hightower), Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Valeryon), Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole), Tom Glynn-Carney (King Aegon II Targaryen), Ewan Mitchell (Prince Aemond Targaryen), Sara Hess (executive producer and writer), and Ryan Condal (co-creator and executive producer). However, Martin’s absence was felt deeply throughout the event.

At the FYC event, the cast and production members talked about their work in Season 2, and what lies ahead in Season 3. George R.R. Martin was part of the panel last year. However, it seems like he decided to sit this one out. What might be the reason?
The feud between Martin and HBO
George R.R. Martin criticized HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 2 for deviating from his book Fire & Blood, particularly the portrayal of the Blood and Cheese sequence. He felt the changes weakened the story’s impact. HBO defended the creative team, emphasizing the challenges of adapting books to screen. The feud highlights creative differences between Martin’s vision and HBO’s execution, though both parties continue collaborating on the series and other projects.
