Who is Saera Targaryen?

Saera Targaryen was the youngest child of King Jaehaerys I and Queen Alysanne. In the latest episode, we learn she was Hugh Hammer’s mother. Hugh describes her as someone who worked in a pleasure house, where she enjoyed more freedom than most because of her silver hair and Targaryen lineage.

Saera tells Hugh he is no different from her brother’s sons, Viserys and Daemon, but he feels ashamed of her profession. The brother in question is Baelon the Brave, Saera’s elder brother. This makes Saera the aunt of Viserys and Daemon, and Hugh their cousin. Answers to Saera’s mysterious past are available in George R. R. Martin’s book, Fire and Blood.

In Fire and Blood, Saera is portrayed as a rebellious and spirited child. She often misbehaved, causing trouble for her family. King Jaehaerys was angry with her antics, especially after she started relationships with several young men at court. Her behavior led to a scandal that deeply embarrassed her parents. After a particularly serious incident, Jaehaerys sent her to the Faith’s care, hoping it would reform her.

However, Saera did not stay long with the Faith. She escaped and fled across the Narrow Sea to Lys, where she worked in a pleasure garden. This decision shocked her family, especially Queen Alysanne, who mourned her daughter’s fate. Saera eventually became the owner of a famous pleasure house in Volantis, making a name for herself far from Westeros. Despite her controversial choices, she remained a figure of fascination and a source of sorrow for her parents.
