Season 2 of House of the Dragon delves deeper into the plight of the small folk in Westeros. Through this, we are introduced to new locations that will soon become important during the Dance of the Dragons. One such location is the town of Tumbleton, mentioned by Hugh Hammer’s wife. But why is Tumbleton important, and why was this mention a huge foreshadowing? This article dives into the lore of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood to uncover the answers to these questions.

Hugh Hammer was introduced early in House of the Dragon, with King Aegon promising to pay him and the blacksmiths in advance for their work in creating weapons and artillery for the war. Hugh is still holding the king to this promise, but his daughter is sick, and his wife is distressed by the rising prices of food and medicine in the capital. Meanwhile, Aegon is injured at Rook’s Rest and unable to deliver on his promises, while his brother Prince Aemond takes over as regent.

After Meleys’ head is paraded through the streets of King’s Landing, Hugh’s wife Kat persuades him to flee to Tumbleton, where her brother lives, saying there is no point waiting for the king to deliver on his promise. Hugh agrees, and the three attempt to flee King’s Landing, but unfortunately, as they try to do so, Prince Aemond orders the city gates to be barred, preventing anyone from leaving or entering.

Tumbleton is a market town in the Reach and the seat of House Footly. It is located sixty leagues southwest of King’s Landing, near the Reach’s northeastern border with the Crownlands. Tumbleton is found at the headwaters of the Mander River. House Footly, who ruled Tumbleton, supported Rhaenyra and the Blacks during the Dance of the Dragons. The prosperous market town of Tumbleton was the site of two major battles during the Dance of the Dragons.

The First Battle of Tumbleton

In the First Battle of Tumbleton, Ser Hugh Hammer and Ser Ulf White betrayed the Blacks and unleashed their dragons, Vermithor and Silverwing, upon the town. Lord Footly’s men surrendered but were slain, and much of Tumbleton was burned to ash by dragonfire. The Greens savagely sacked Tumbleton, encamping outside the walls. Ser Jon Roxton killed Lord Footly and claimed his wife, Lady Sharis Footly. The leaders of the Greens squabbled for control as their commander, Lord Ormund Hightower, had been killed in the battle.

The Second Battle of Tumbleton

The Second Battle of Tumbleton was another significant conflict during the Dance of the Dragons. It took place after the First Battle had already ravaged the town. Prince Daeron Targaryen, sickened by the sack of Tumbleton, ordered his forces to restore order, but chaos continued. Meanwhile, Ser Addam Velaryon, determined to defend his honor, gathered a new army to retake Tumbleton from the traitorous dragonriders Ulf and Hugh. Despite being outnumbered, Addam’s surprise attack allowed his forces to achieve a temporary victory. However, the blacks failed to reclaim Tumbleton fully, and the Greens’ survivors retreated into the town. The battle resulted in significant losses, including the deaths of dragons Vermithor, Seasmoke, and Tessarion.
