When Aegon II is holding council and listening to complaints from the general public, a Blacksmith named Hugh comes forward. He raises the issue of rising Iron prices and conveys the struggle faced by most blacksmiths in King’s Landing. Otto Hightower and Aegon II hear him out patiently.

Hugh further requests the King to pay them beforehand so that they can bear the costs of Iron that is needed to make a Scorpio, which is a special trap for dragons. While Aegon certainly accepts his request and promises to pay him well, we are yet to see how the same is actioned in the series.

Who is Hugh Hammer?

His full name is Hugh Hammer, a bastard Blacksmith of Valyrian descent. According to George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, Hugh goes on to play a major role in House of the Dragon season 2.

Moreover, in Fire and Blood, Prince Jacaerys organizes an event to call for dragon riders. The Blacks have dragons but are short on riders who can help win the battle. We can expect Hugh to make his way to the Blacks and become one of the dragonseeds.

Possibly, when Aegon II fails to fulfill his promise, the Blacksmiths are forced to stop working for him. The coin in King’s Landing is rapidly declining owing to the war and as a king, Aegon II should have been wary of making empty promises.
