House of the Dragon episode 3 introduces a new Dragon!
Although the War for the Stepstones was wrapped in less than 10 minutes on screen, we didn’t miss the newest dragon reveal, Seasmoke. Audiences may have confused the dragon at the end for the same dragon at the start, Caraxes. But that is not the case. We knew there would be a dragon to help defeat Crabfeeder and his troop, but with Daemon on the shore faux surrendering, who would ride Caraxes?
An important thing to note about dragons and riders is that dragons are very selective and possessive about their riders. They only have one rider, and things don’t end well when their rider mounts another dragon. Even Daenerys rode only Drogon though all three of her dragons considered her their mother.

What do we know about Seasmoke?
Seasmoke saved the day at the War for the Stepstones. He is Laenor Velaryon’s (Theo Nate) dragon. Unlike Daemon and Caraxes, Laenor is the first one to claim Seasmoke. The dragon is relatively young and small compared to the other dragons but is Laenor’s pride and joy, as per the book. Laenor and Seasmoke have had a deep bond since Laenor was around seven years old.
It is a common misconception that only Targaryens can ride dragons, but anyone with the blood of Old Valyria can become Dragonriders. Dragons have famously not responded well to non-Valyrians attempting to ride them, often ending up severely injured or dead.
We will surely see Seasmoke appear here and there along the series, but not as much as Daemon and Rhaenyra’s dragons, Caraxes and Syrax. Ten new dragons are confirmed to feature in Season 1 of House of the Dragon. A further seven dragons will appear in the later seasons. Which dragon are you most excited to see?
