Emily Carey’s new show Geek Girl is now out on Netflix
Geek Girl is a ten-part series with a unique spin on the coming-of-age story. It follows Harriet Manners, an awkward teenager who unexpectedly enters the modeling world. As she navigates the challenges and surprises of her new life, she tries to stay true to herself. The series, adapted from Holly Smale’s popular novel, explores growth, self-discovery, and embracing one’s uniqueness.
The trailer for Geek Girl introduces viewers to Emily Carey as Harriet Manners, a geeky 16-year-old scouted by a modeling agency during a school trip. Despite her reluctance, she begins to embrace her new lifestyle after meeting young supermodel Nick Park, played by Liam Woodrum.
The story highlights the pressures of media attention and the journey of finding one’s place while standing out. The series also stars Tim Downie, Jemima Rooper, Rochelle Harrington, Hersha Verity, Sarah Parish, Emmanuel Imani, Zac Looker, Sandra Yi Sencindiver, and Daisy Jelley. Jessica Ruston and Holly Smale co-created it for TV, with additional writing by Sameera Steward, Sarah Morgan, Zoë Rocha, and Georgie Armour.
The “Geek Girl” books were inspired by Smale’s experiences as a teenage fashion model. She described writing the first novel as a cathartic experience. In a 2015 interview with The Telegraph, she shared that her father never realized how difficult her modeling experiences were at the time, and writing “Geek Girl” helped her process those challenges.
