House of the Dragon debuts new Targaryen relic, and fans are obsessed.
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, fans got a thrilling surprise: a full suit of Valyrian steel armor worn by Aegon II Targaryen. Aegon II wears Aegon the Conqueror’s armor
Aegon II, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, dons this magnificent armor with the help of servants and some of his new Kingsguard knights. As he prepares to ride his dragon, Sunfyre, into battle, he declares, “I was given the conqueror’s name and his crown, so I shall wear his armor to war.” The armor is made of Valyrian steel, which is incredibly rare and valuable. In the show, it’s said to cost more than a castle.

Valyrian Steel Armour in the books
Valyrian steel armor is also a topic in George R.R. Martin’s books. In the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Aeron Greyjoy from the Iron Islands mentions that no Valyrian steel armor has been seen since the Doom of Valyria. However, his brother Euron Greyjoy claims to own a set. Euron’s armor is hinted at in preview chapters of The Winds of Winter, though it has yet to appear in the main books. In the books, a set like this costs more than a kingdom. House Targaryen, a minor Valyrian House, would not have been able to afford this.
The revelation of Aegon the Conqueror’s Valyrian steel armor is significant. Although Martin described Aegon wearing “a shirt of black scales,” he never confirmed if it was made of Valyrian steel. Showrunner Ryan Condal commented that the armor is an heirloom from old Valyria. However, according to the books, Aegon was born on Dragonstone after his family fled Valyria, suggesting a possible change in the show’s storyline./
