HBO Now sees half a million downloads, 3x revenue jump on Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere day
Game of Thrones is a popular show, no doubt. We have heard all about its popularity, ranging from how it is the most pirated show on the planet, to how the Season 7 premiere caused a drop in PornHub’s traffic. Season 7 premiered last season, and got a whopping 10.1 million viewers,as we reported, and now we have some insight behind these figures.TechCrunchreports that the premiere led to a massive jump in the downloads and revenue made by HBO’s streaming service app, HBO Now. Read on!
AppAnnie, the analytics firm which studies mobile app data, recently revealed in a report that on the day of Game of Thrones Season 7 premiere, HBO Now saw a four-time jump in app download to get over half a million downloads. It also saw a boost in revenue, racking up three times as much revenue as compared to the usual numbers. HBO Now found itself the number three spot on the highest grossing apps list, on both Google Play Store, and the iOS App Store. It also became the top grossing non-game app, beating all, except Candy Crush Saga, and Clash of Clans. This jump was because the users installed the HBO Now app and subscribed immediately, so as to watch the Season 7 premiere.
Now, the fact is that HBO Now is only available in the US, but the HBO Go app, which is available in some regions outside the US, also saw a jump in downloads. Between July 16, and July 18, HBO Go saw over a 3x jump as compared to the average daily downloads.
At this rate, though, HBO Now might end up topping the charts sometime in the future. Maybe Season 8? That’s quite a while away, so totally possible. Only time will tell. What do you think? Tell us in the comments, down below!
