10 details you might have missed in House of The Dragon Episode 6

Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is a massive storm brewing, with the Targaryens smack in the middle of it. The storyline is going through a period of turmoil, the storm has already begun. The prequel series showed Vhagar for the first time, and she is as grand as one can imagine. Amongst all the chaos that ensued, there is some stuff that’s easy to slip out of view. Let’s have a look at some of these easy-to-miss details from the sixth episode.

Tales of wishful romances

intro

House of The Dragon features a lot of unrequited love, just as in Game of Thrones. During the 10 years that have passed between episode 5 and 6, Daemon marries Laena after Rhaenyra marries Laenor. Daemon’s marriage to Laena is also indicated in the intro beforehand, with his signature dragon helm. However, Laena hints that Daemon is still in love with his niece, and she is okay with that. Criston Cole, on the other hand, joins Alicent in his quest to bring down Rhaenyra, playing the part of a scorned lover.

One-Eye foreshadowing

halaena

Princess Helaena Targaryen (Evie Allen) is the second child of Alicent Hightower with King Viserys. She slips in an interesting easter egg about the upcoming episode, where her brother, Prince Aemond Targaryen will be seeing things differently after he steals (spoiler alert) from the Velaryons. Helaena’s dialogue, that says, “He’ll have to close one eye”, will one day become the namesake of the dragonless prince.

Harwin’s message to Rhaenyra’s sons is similar to Ned Stark’s message to Jon Snow in Game of Thrones

It is no doubt that Ser Harwin ‘Breakbones’ Strong cares about Rhaenyra’s children, perhaps too deeply almost like a father. His last message is a direct reference to Ned Stark’s promise to Jon Snow when they last meet before his death in Game of Thrones, which sadly never comes to pass.

Grand Maester changes during the period of 10 years

Grand Maesters hold an important seat on the small council, and there has been a big change over the course of the last 10 years in House of The Dragon. Until episode 5, it was Grand Maester Mellos who held the title, and he presumably perished and his role later went on to the more talented Archmaester Orwyle, who was selected by the conclave as the new Grand Maester.

Viserys is missing an arm

Viserys’ condition is only getting worse. Last we saw he lost two of his fingers, and in the current episode, he had to let go of the whole of his hand. The infection is spreading much faster than expected, and Viserys almost looks like an 80-year-old man, despite being around 40. He is still trying to get his family together, turning a blind eye to Rhaenyra’s actions out of her fatherly love. The stress of ruling the kingdom and managing his family only worsen his condition. He also misses his wife Aemma, and he keeps both of their wedding rings close to him, as seen towards the end of the episode when he kisses her ring.

Aemma Arryn’s ring

Despite what happened during the first episode, Viserys loved Aemma dearly. She was the glue that held his family together. He misses his wife, and he keeps both of their wedding rings close to him, as seen towards the end of the episode when he kisses her ring. Do you think Aemma’s presence might have changed the current situation in Westeros?

Both Daemon and Rhaenyra’s lovers die by fire

House of The Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, hence you can be pretty sure to see both of them in plenty. In a cruel twist of fate (or Martin’s imagination), both Rhaenyra and Daemon’s lovers are killed by fire, foreshadowing how their fates are bound to each other.

Meaning of Stranger

Before leaving for Harrenhal, Ser Harwin Strong says to his newborn son, Joffrey, that the next time they meet he will be a stranger to him. In the Westerosi religion of the ‘New Gods’ the ‘Stranger’ is the God that represents Death. Did Harwin somehow know that he won’t be seeing his son again?

Larys picking up Malvales

Larys ‘Clubfoot’ Strong has been working his way up, spreading his influence, as we see in episode 5 when he reaches Alicent with his life-altering info. He compares Alicent to Malvales, a flower endemic to Braavos but has been planted in the King’s Landing’s courtyard. He plucks the same flower once again at the end of the episode, grinning at his accomplishment.

Alicent removes NSFW paintings from her room

Compared to the earlier episodes, Alicent now has more say than ever in the court/small council. This is reflected in the design of her room, where the walls were previously decorated by NSFW art of the Targaryens. She removes them, being an ardent follower of the Faith of the Seven, and vows to bring ‘decency’ back to Westeros.

Reference to Daario Naharis

Daario Naharis, the Tyroshi sellsword and Daenerys’ former lover, might have disappeared completely from Game of Thrones without a trace, but House of The Dragon did a good job referencing his birth place in episode 6. Laenor talks to Rhaenyra about a Tyroshi general, going on to mention how they die their beards.

Blood and Cheese reference

blood

Episode 6 also featured another reference to Blood and Cheese, something that was also referenced in the last episode. A rat catcher known only as Cheese teams up with a butcher using the name Blood. Together, on the orders of Mysaria, who herself is working for Daemon, they sneak into the Red Keep via a secret passageway. This leads them to Alicent Hightower’s bedroom, and what happens next is the stuff of true horror.
