House of the Dragon Episode 3 introduces an important new character
It took three years for Daemon Targaryen and the Sea Snake to win their war in the Stepstones, while it only took one episode and a seven-minute action sequence to resolve the conflict in House of the Dragon. However, the new episode (Second of His Name) managed to introduce an important new character just when Rhaenyra shows up in the Kingswood camp.
In the scene that name-checks Lady Swann (highlights from George R. R. Martin‘s novel), Larys Strong, also known as Larys Clubfoot, played by Matthew Needham, sneaks his way into the narrative.
Who is Ser Larys Strong?
Larys Strong, nicknamed Larys Clubfoot or simply Clubfoot, was the head of House Strong and lord of Harrenhal during the last years of Viserys I Targaryen’s reign and the entirety of Aegon II Targaryen’s reign. He held the position of master of whisperers and Lord Confessor on both kings’ small councils.
Strong was a man who was skilled in manipulation and quick-thinking. He was not one for small talk, preferring to listen instead. When he did speak, it was either to make a joke or to say something of great significance. Although most of his family were die-hard Blacks, Larys himself was a staunch Green.
With that being said, Ser Larys made his debut in the third episode of House of the Dragon, and he might just be the character that the show needs to square up with Game of Thrones‘ Littlefinger and Varys. His debut emphasized his talent for slipping into private rooms unnoticed before it’s too late.
