Interview
Game of Thrones’ Indira Varma (Ellaria) was disappointed that her character didn’t die in front of the camera
There are times when the death of a character becomes more talked of than the character itself. Game of Thrones featured some of the most gruesome death scenes ever filmed in television history. However, one of them, in season 5, though not so gruesome, stood out amongst the rest. The death of Princess Myrcella Baratheon was one of the most emotionally cruel scenes of Game of Thrones, and the one which turned Cersei into a more sadistic character. In season 7, Cersei captures her daughter’s murderers Ellaria (Indira Varma) and her daughter Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers), and kills them the same way. Varma talked about that episode in a recent interview.

She looked back at how the scene was filmed, and told The Hollywood Reporter, “It was funny because [showrunners] Dan [Weiss] and Dave [Benioff] gave me the call to say you’re going to die — and it’s expected. Who doesn’t die on Thrones? But I was like, ‘Well, I better bloody die on camera and it better be good!’”
“And then I read it, and I was really disappointed because she doesn’t actually die on camera. But I thought about it and reread that scene, and I thought, ‘That is just perfect.’ It’s a perfect ending to be killed the way we killed her.”
