House of the Dragon has garnered positive reviews both from the critics as well as the audience. The OG fans are well aware of the book it is based on, but it has left a part of the audience in the dark because of their unfamiliarity with the previous books.

Like the earlier renditions of the Game of Thrones universe, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood led to the creation of the epic tale of the House of the Dragon. The book is a long historical account of House Targaryen reigning supreme in Westeros.

Quick answer: House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, that takes place almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It shows the House Targaryen in all its glory, starting from King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms to the succession of the Iron Throne after King Viserys I Targaryen and, finally, leading to the civil war, a.k.a The Dance of Dragons.

The distortion of facts and history in the live-action series has been a major concern for fans around the globe, especially after the “epic” finale season of Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon covers only a certain segment of the book.

The first season of House of the Dragon focuses primarily on the second half of Fire & Blood. The prequel begins with King Viserys claiming the iron throne after he succeeds King Jaehaerys I Targaryen. A whole chunk of King Aegon I has been left off maybe to make the series more crisp and intriguing.

Six major volumes within Fire & Blood sum up the whole story. These are as follows – The Targaryen Conquest, The Peace of the Dragon, The Sons of the Dragon, Heirs of the Dragon, The Dying of the Dragons, and The Aftermath.

The first season of House of the Dragon touches upon the fourth and fifth parts of the book, i.e. the succession of the iron throne after King Viserys I, and the Targayeran civil war between his daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Aegon II.
