The House Velaryon at the royal wedding

The fifth episode of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon showcased the Royal Wedding of Laenor Velaryon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, a seemingly joyous celebration that ended tragically. There were many concessions made for the sake of maintaining the peace in the realm. However, beneath those compromises, there was an unspoken tension just ready to explode. It wasn’t as tragic as the Red Wedding, but it was just as wild, and one key character was killed.

Steve Toussaint reveals a deleted scene from the wedding in Episode 5

Live Interview with Steve Toussaint of House of the Dragon

In an interview with Black With No Chaser TV, Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon in the show, revealed, “There was a section that got cut from the scene from the episode. I don’t remember the number of the episode, but it was the one with the wedding, or the pre-wedding. Where his [Laenor’s] lover is killed. And I think in the episode he’s just on the floor, crying over his lover’s corpse. But what we actually shot and it was a suggestion that I made. I said, “Director Clare, I wanna do this thing.” She goes, “Yeah, sure.”

“I actually grabbed him, dragged him up on his feet, and marched him to the princess. I was basically like, “Go f*cking marry her. Do it!” But I get it. Time constraints, and they couldn’t use that.”

Steve Toussaint believes the deleted scene would have shown Corlys’ true character

House of the Dragon fans know Corlys Velaryon is an ambitious character, but his love for his family is his one saving grace. Toussaint thinks that the scene would have added more depth to his character, “I thought that was the cruelty of Corlys. That was the thing of: “I don’t care what you think and what your feelings are. You’re gonna do this thing because it’s gonna get us closer to the crown.” I know it was time constraints but I wish they had because it’d have shown a slightly darker side to Corlys, really.”
