Game of Thrones teased viewers with its limited dragon appearance potential. The prequel series House of the Dragon satisfied viewers with a glimpse into the mighty world ruled by dragons and their riders. A relationship forged by Taragaryen blood, the dynasty has long reared dragons as their cherished companions. In many ways, that is said to be the source of their power and might. The confidence they get from being able to control their dragons is unparalleled.

It was easier to recognize which dragon is on screen in Game of Thrones since Daenerys is the only Targaryen with dragons. However, House of the Dragons showcases one or more dragons with each prominent Targaryen. While we will hopefully get to see more dragons in House of the Dragon season 2, here is a rundown of all the dragons that appeared in the first season of the HBO show. We have also collated the owner, possible size, and power of the dragons. Hence, giving you a comprehensive guide on who’s who among the Targaryen dragons.

Dragons in House of the Dragon Season 1

Syrax

The first mighty flying pet we see is Rhaenyra’s golden Syrax. Armed with great speed and strength, the dragon helped the princess learn how to become a dragon rider. The first dragon of a Targaryen does invoke a particularly close emotional bond as people usually do with their pets. They understand each other and protect each other at all costs as Syrax did when Daemon threatens Rhaenyra. Syrax lays eggs in season 1 so we can expect to see her children in the upcoming seasons. Despite being formidable beyond compare, Syrax is not the biggest Targaryen dragon.

Caraxes

Ridden by Daemon Targaryen, Caraxes is one of the most fearsome dragons, similar to his dragon rider. When his original rider Aemon was murdered, Caraxes came to be with Daemon. The blood-red dragon is a sight to behold as his scales wonderfully reflect the scarlet hue, blending the blood of his enemies seamlessly. In the first season, we have only seen the dragon feast on goats and enemies, we might get to see the savage beast in action in House of the Dragon season 2. His snake-like neck complements Daemon’s snake-like cunning.

Balerion the Black Dread

The last trueborn dragon of Valyria, Balerion the Black Dread is not alive in the first season. We only see his skull in the crypt where Viserys speaks to his daughter Rhaenyra. Befitting its name, the dragon’s skull is enormous, leaving fans to wonder how towering its entire body would have been. Balerion belonged to Aegon the Conqueror who consolidated the seven kingdoms and established his power. If his rider is any indication, we can imagine the relentless might of Balerion back in its prime days. After Aegon, Viserys I mount Balerion the Black Dread.

Seasmoke

Ser Laenor Velaryon rides the dragon called Seasmoke probably named after its color that blends among mountains and seascapes. This comes in handy during hunts and sneak attacks as his first appearance suggests. Laenor and Seasmoke help Daemon defeat that Crabfeeder. He first appears in the third episode of House of the Dragon with his rider on his back. Even though Laenor is not a Targaryen, he has dragon blood since his mother is Rhaenys Targaryen. The dragon is not seen further in the show until we learn Laenor elopes with his lover in episode 7. However, Seasmoke’s fate remains in the lurk since he is said to be on Driftmark without anyone taking care of him. Daemon seems to know of the dragon’s whereabouts, suggesting his addition to Daemon’s fleet.

Dreamfyre

Episode 2 of House of the Dragon makes a mention of Dreamfyre when Daemon steals one of her eggs. Her whereabouts are unknown at first, though we believe she might be in the Dragonpit with the other beasts. Dreamfyre is one of the most beautiful dragons on the show with blue-scaled skin and silver wings. After Princess Rhaena Targaryen, the dragon chooses Princess Helaena Targaryen, daughter of Viserys and Alicent Hightower, to be her companion. This has not been shown in the series yet, so season 2 might make it happen. Dreamfyre is also said to be the bridge between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. The dragon eggs Daenerys finds might be Dreamfyre’s lost eggs.

Meleys

Mounted by The Queen Who Never Was Rhaenys Targaryen, Meleys was once a strong and cunning dragon. Time slowed her down, but nothing could curb her zest. The red and pink dragon first belonged to Princess Alyssa Targaryen, who died in childbirth. Since then, Rhaenys and Meleys have been inseparable, throughout the betrayal the princess faced for not getting the throne. The scarlet dragon has a coronet of horns around her head, juxtaposing the crown Rhaenys deserved. In episode 9, Meleys helps Rhaenys break free from Alicent’s imprisonment and takes her to safety. Their joint conviction and determination prove to be a formidable foe.

Vhagar

Undoubtedly the largest living dragon in the House of the Dragon show, Vhagar is impressive in both size and might. Being a relative of Balerion the Black Dread, she is the oldest living dragon since Aegon the Conqueror’s time too. Vhagar belongs to Princess Laena Velaryon who marries Daemon. Vhagar is also an obedient and understanding companion since she ends Laena’s life upon her request after she suffers a traumatic childbirth. Subsequently, Aemond Targaryen steals Vhagar from Laena’s daughters, becoming one of the youngest Targaryens to mount the biggest living dragon. This instance also acts as a turning point between the Velaryron and Targaryen families, poetically justifying the dance of the dragons!

Vermax

Rhaenyra’s eldest son Jace bonds with young Vermax after the dragon hatches out of its egg in his crib. The duo swiftly become close companions and their bond proves to the masses that Jacaerys is a true Targaryen. The princess entrusts Jace and Vermax to ride north and find allies for her war against the throne. Even though Vermax despairs in cold weather, he joins Jace on his journey and proves a worthy partner.

Vermithor

The longest-reigning ruler of House Targaryen, King Jaeherys, rode the bronze beast Vermithor. After the King died, Vermithor remained unclaimed till Daemon sang a song to nudge the dragon out of the nest. In the upcoming war between Rhaenyra and Alicent, even one dragon can mean the difference between victory and utter defeat. Daemon and Rhaenyra will have to find a rider for Vermithor, but he will surely be a valuable addition to Rhaenyra’s fleet.

Arrax

The young dragon that meets his end in the season 1 finale is Arrax. Mounted by Prince Lucerys, the pearly white dragon gets bitten by Vhagar and eventually plummets to death. He falls into Storm’s End and takes Luke with him. His blue scales give him a certain luminescence in the dark.

While preparing for the ultimate fight, Daemon lists three unclaimed wild dragons that live on Dragonstone. He pledges to find them and bring them to Rhaenyra so that they can defeat Alicent and claim the throne. Sheepstealer, Grey Ghost, and the Cannibal are the three dragons that live free and unencumbered by a rider. As the name suggests, Sheepstealer is a meager dragon who loves feasting on sheep. Grey Ghost hides in the shadows, away from men and unnecessary attention. As a wild dragon, he is an impressive hunter who takes pride in sneak attacks.

However, the most fearsome dragon of all is the Cannibal. Aptly named, he enjoys dragon flesh above all else and hunts other dragons for fun. Fans cannot wait to see the three wild dragons make an appearance in season 2 since Daemon always comes through on his promises.
