House of the Dragon’s Battle of Rook’s Rest was influenced by Top Gun: Maverick’s aerial battle
The aerial shots of Meleys vs Sunfyre vs Vhagar were influenced by Top Gun!

The Game of Thrones franchise is known for its extravagant and gory battles, and House of the Dragon did not disappoint. So far, we have seen more dragon vs dragon battles than we had in the original show, which is one of its major attractions. While we do have more to look forward to in Season 3, let’s have a closer look at the behind-the-scenes mechanisms of these aerial battles.
Top Gun: Maverick inspired House of the Dragon’s in-air battles
The expectations are always high when a battle is being filmed for a show as high-budgeted as House of the Dragon. The numerous dragons did soar the costs to another level, but the end result was satisfactory for the majority of fans. This would not have been possible without the combined efforts of special effects studios like Pixomondo and Rodeo. A BTS video from Pixomondo explains how the sky clashes took inspiration from Top Gun: Maverick.
House of the Dragon cast received Season 3 scripts
If you are one of those eagerly waiting for Season 3, you might not have to wait much longer. At MEGACON Orlando, Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) and Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole) excitedly engaged with fans about the upcoming season of House of the Dragon. Smith revealed that he had received multiple scripts for Season 3, confirming that production is progressing smoothly.
Smith mentioned that episodes three, five, and six had recently been sent to the cast members. Additionally, he shared that he had read scripts for episodes one to three, indicating that the writing process is well underway. This suggests that the creative team has already mapped out the season, with filming preparations set to begin in early 2025.
