Matt Smith pushed for his vision scenes in Harrenhal to be as mad and horror-like as possible

Matt Smith is performing one of his best roles to date as Daemon Targaryen. Many people often forget where the actor ends and the character begins. Smith is known to give a character his all when he truly believes in the project and the potential of his character. As Daemon, he has done full justice to every storyline we have seen so far in House of the Dragon show.

With season 2, we are introduced to an all-new Daemon Targaryen, one who is riddled with guilt, paranoia, and fear of his past actions. He is unable to move on and focus on the present when the ghosts of his past keep following him everywhere. One aspect proving this existential dread is Daemon’s visions in the latest episodes of House of the Dragon season 2.

Matt Smith loved the vision sequences and wanted them to have a horror aspect

The actor is known to improvise and offer his perspective on a scene after he has deeply understood the nuances of his character in that situation. As Smith did with the soldier scene when Daemon first arrives at Harrenhal, he further expressed his take on filming the vision sequences in House of the Dragon season 2.

As soon as Daemon enters Harrenhal, weird things start happening to him. He cannot focus or sleep all the while troubling visions keep him on the verge of insanity. Smith explained that he wanted such scenes to have a mad quality. In the recent making of the episode video, Smith shared,

“I loved that when I read it. I wanted the dream sequences or whatever you call them I was always pushing that they felt mad and horror-like as possible if we’re going to go for it let’s go for it great having Milly back uh we really miss her, it’s so much fun.”

It was indeed thrilling to have Milly Alcock back as Rhaenyra Targaryen on the show, harking back to a time when Daemon and Rhaenyra actually had a good relationship. In the present, Rhaenyra does not trust Daemon and blames him for putting her claim at risk. On the other hand, the Rogue Prince is enraged by these accusations as he has done nothing but good for his wife.

The vision sequences that slowly portray Daemon’s descent into madness truly transport the audience to another realm altogether. They might be cryptic but the visions certainly point toward that one aspect of guilt and sorrow that is perhaps explored deeply in the upcoming episodes of House of the Dragon season 2.
