The latest House of the Dragon episode ended on a cliffhanger, with Aegon burned by Vhagar’s flames after Aemond attacked him. As of now, we do not know if he survived or not.

However, new stills for episode 5 of House of the Dragon suggest that Aemond will take charge during the war. We have seen images of Aemond holding Aegon the Conqueror’s dagger, which he took from Aegon in the last episode.

Aemond with Alicent and Aegon the Conqueror’s dagger

New stills from HBO show Aemond Targaryen standing with his mother, Alicent Hightower. The last episode concluded with a dramatic scene where Aemond took Aegon the Conqueror’s dagger from his brother, who lay injured with his dragon after the battle at Rook’s Rest.

The dagger is very important and has been passed down from ruler to ruler since Aegon the Conqueror. It is also crucial in Game of Thrones, where Arya Stark wields it against the White Walkers. Before Aegon, Viserys held it and showed it to Rhaenyra when he revealed the prophecy to her.

Its appearance in Aemond’s hand suggests he will assume the role of a ruler in the coming war. The new stills also show Aemond with the sword, Blackfyre. However, the top of the sword seems broken. A part of the hilt might have broken when Aegon and Sunfyre crashed.

The sword’s pommel is no longer visible, leading people to believe it was broken.

In the books, Aemond became Prince Regent after Aegon was injured at Rook’s Rest. Aemond ruled in his stead as Prince Regent and Protector of the Realm for a year while Aegon recovered. He took up the iron and ruby crown of Aegon the Conqueror and was said to have stated that it looked better on himself than it ever did on Aegon.

As Prince Regent, Aemond gathered an army with Ser Criston Cole, the Hand of the King. They marched against Prince Daemon at Harrenhal.
