The eighth season of Game of Thrones was not to everyone’s taste. The season finale split the fan base in two. One wanted a season redo, while the other was OK with the conclusion. Some pointed to the absence of George R. R. Martin‘s next book in the series as the reason.

Some blamed the showrunners’ growing ambition to collaborate with Disney’s Lucasfilm on a simultaneous Star Wars feature film trilogy. The duo has finally opened up about the Star Wars film that was canceled.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have often been cited as the reason for Game of Thrones Season 8 failure. Many fans believed it was because of a Star Wars pitch they were working on. In a recent interview with THR, they revealed more details about it. Benioff revealed, “We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber…”

Weiss added, “And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson, the duo’s longtime friend and 3BP producer] called his movie The Last Jedi. He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.”

Benioff further detailed how they lost the Star Wars project, after Disney put up The Last Jedi in development instead of their project,

“[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a First Jedi story. We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that. And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for.”
