Game of Thrones’ final two seasons were originally supposed to be a film trilogy
Not everyone found Season 8 of Game of Thrones to be enjoyable. The fan base was split in half after the season finale. Some explained it away by saying that George R. R. Martin‘s next book in the series isn’t out yet. The showrunners’ increasing ambition to collaborate with Disney’s Lucasfilm on a parallel Star Wars feature film trilogy was attributed by some. Fans definitely felt the quality fell off after Season 6, and the reason might just have been revealed.
Game of Thrones beyond Season 6 was supposed to be a film trilogy
While promoting their new Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, the showrunner duo stated in an interview with WSJ Magazine that they intended to wrap up Game of Thrones with a film series, but HBO and AT&T had other ideas.
Instead of the 13 episodes that we ultimately saw for the final two seasons of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss stated that they intended to wrap up the series as a trilogy of films. Benioff and Weiss claim that the management team reminded them that their series was intended for the “Home Box Office” rather than the “Away Box Office.”
3 Body Problem might change fans’ opinions about the Game of Thrones showrunners
In an earlier interview, John Bradley, a Game of Thrones alum who reunited with Benioff and Weiss for 3 Body Problem, hoped that the Netflix show would restore the audience’s faith in them. He said,
“Certain people who still have an attitude toward Thrones are maybe looking to see them not hit the mark this time. That’s in the back of David and Dan’s mind — because how could it not be? I think people are going to see this and re-reevaluate them and realize just how great they always were. It’s going to prove a lot of people right, and, maybe, a few people wrong. They’re still trying to break the boundaries of what television can be.”
