The Great Council and Election of Viserys

Jaehaerys I Targaryen, nearing death, calls a Great Council at Harrenhal. The purpose is to decide the heir to the Iron Throne. The council debates and ultimately selects Jaehaerys’s grandson, Viserys Targaryen. After Jaehaerys’s death, Viserys becomes the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms.

Lyonel Strong and his son Harwin die in a fire at Harrenhal. The fire is secretly orchestrated by Larys Strong. When questioned by Queen Alicent about the incident, Larys dismisses it, claiming it is the curse of Harrenhal. His indifference raises suspicions about his motives.

Daemon Takes Harrenhal

Daemon flies Caraxes to Harrenhal during a severe storm to claim it for the Blacks. Landing atop Kingspyre Tower, he faces minimal resistance. He quickly subdues the castle’s guards and declares his claim in the great hall. Harrenhal’s castellan, Ser Simon Strong, bends the knee and pledges loyalty to Rhaenyra.

Simon explains his hatred for his nephew Larys Strong, who murdered Simon’s father and brother. Daemon orders Simon to begin repairs on Harrenhal. The castle must be prepared to house an army. Daemon also commands Simon to summon Grover Tully to negotiate terms of support for their cause.

Later that night, Daemon experiences a strange dream in Harrenhal’s godswood. A dark-haired woman named Alys Rivers warns him he will die at Harrenhal.

Alys shares her belief that Harrenhal is cursed. She explains that Harren the Black destroyed sacred weirwood trees during the castle’s construction. She claims their spirits still linger, whispering to those within the castle’s walls.

Daemon executes Willem Blackwood in the godswood of Harrenhal, as commanded by Lord Oscar Tully.

Game of Thrones: Harrenhal’s Role

In Season 1, Catelyn encounters Willis Wode, a knight of Harrenhal, at the Inn at the Crossroads. She asks for his loyalty to Lady Whent and her father. Willis agrees and helps Catelyn restrain Tyrion Lannister.

King Joffrey later grants Harrenhal to Janos Slynt as a reward for betraying Eddard Stark.

After the Lannisters lose the Battle of Whispering Wood, Tywin Lannister plans to capture Harrenhal. He intends to use it as a strategic base for his army in the Riverlands. Tywin’s army outnumbers Robb Stark’s forces, who consolidate near Riverrun in response.

In Season 2, Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie are taken to Harrenhal, now a Lannister stronghold. They witness brutal torture led by the Mountain, Tickler, and Polliver. In Season 3, Robb Stark’s army finds Harrenhal abandoned by the Mountain. The Northern and Riverlands prisoners have been executed. After Hoster Tully’s death, Robb leaves Harrenhal. Roose Bolton stays behind to command the ruined castle with part of the Northern army.

Jaime Lannister arrives at Harrenhal as a prisoner after being captured and maimed by Locke. He is accompanied by Brienne, who was escorting him to King’s Landing to trade for Catelyn’s daughters. Jaime later negotiates his release with Roose Bolton, while Brienne remains behind to face Locke’s wrath.

Locke throws Brienne into a bear pit. Jaime returns to Harrenhal to rescue her and successfully saves her. Furious, Locke remains behind as Jaime and Brienne depart for King’s Landing.

In Season 4, Locke abandons Harrenhal and returns to the Dreadfort alongside Roose Bolton. Harrenhal remains leaderless after Littlefinger’s execution in Season 7. As the sole member of House Baelish, his death leaves the castle without a lord once again.
