Emily Carey (Alicent) says she was initially scared of filming intimate scenes for House of the Dragon
During a recent interview with Newsweek, actress Emily Carey revealed that she felt scared of doing the intimate scenes in HBO’s House of the Dragon. She felt this way necessarily because of how the scenes were portrayed in Game of Thrones. The actress plays Alicent Hightower, the second wife of Paddy Considine’s character, King Viserys I.
Carey had two intimate scenes in House of the Dragon Episode 4. In this regard, the actress said that she was afraid of getting intimate with a person who is 47 years old. Also, Carey is just 18 years old.
The actor felt reassured thanks to the work of an intimacy coordinator. Intimacy coordinators choreograph simulated sex between actors on film and television sets and make sure that the well-being of the actors is considered during filming.
Emily Carey on filming intimate scenes in House of the Dragon
This is what the young actress revealed during an interview with Newsweek –
“We have an intimacy coordinator who was amazing. Again, still being 17, the first scene that I read from the show was my sex scene and my intimacy scenes, that includes the scene where I’m bathing the king—anything that felt intimate was considered an intimacy scene, which I thought was great.
But, it scared me, because at that point I still hadn’t met Paddy, I didn’t know how much of a joy he was and how easy he was going to make [the scene], and all I saw was, you know, a 47-year-old man and me, I was a bit concerned.”
She continued:
“And having that outlet of the intimacy coordinator, to be able to talk everything through and not be shunned, or not feel awkward, or not feel like ‘Oh, this isn’t your job. I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable but can I ask you…’ it was never any of that, it was just that open dialogue.
I’ve never seen Game of Thrones before, and so in the pre-production period I sat down to try and watch [it] and of course the first season, even just the first episode of Thrones, there’s a lot of violence upon women.
There’s a lot of violent sex and it made me nervous. I was like, ‘Oh God, what am I gonna have to do in this show?”
House of the Dragon explores the Targaryen rule in-depth and will eventually lead up to the Dance of the Dragons – a civil war that nearly destroyed House Targaryen. The dance began when Alicent contested Rhaenyra’s right to the throne, claiming that she was illegitimate.
