What is White House Farm about?

White House Farm is a British true crime television miniseries that aired in January 2020. It was broadcast in some countries under the name The Murders at White House Farms. The series is based on the White House Farm murders that occurred in 1985 in Essex, England. It tells the story of the murders and the investigation that followed.

The show was created by Holly Wright and produced by New Pictures in partnership with Channel 4. It explores the trial of Jeremy Bamber, who was accused of killing his family. Notable actors like Emily Watson played key roles, with her performance as Detective Superintendent drawing praise.

Mark Addy

Mark Addy gained fame for his portrayal of King Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones. He brought to life the character of a once-mighty warrior who led a successful rebellion to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty. Now king of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert’s reign spirals into indulgence and excess, masking the disillusionment he feels. His marriage to Cersei Lannister lacks true affection, and unknown to him, his children are the result of her incestuous affair with Jaime Lannister. Robert’s death sets off a fierce power struggle among Westeros’ noble houses, shaping the political drama of the series.

In White House Farm, Addy plays DS Stan Jones, a determined police officer who uncovers the truth behind a horrific family murder. Stan pushes against the police’s early conclusion of murder-suicide. He insists on a proper forensic investigation when others disregard it. Stan refused to accept negligence, particularly regarding the contamination of the crime scene.

Stan’s introduction of key evidence proved crucial in convicting Jeremy Bamber, the killer. While the case influenced how police handle crime scenes, little is known about Stan’s life afterward.

Gemma Whelan

Gemma Whelan rose to prominence for her portrayal of Yara Greyjoy, the fierce and determined leader of the Ironborn in Game of Thrones. As Lady of the Iron Islands and the last surviving child of Balon Greyjoy, she commands a longship, the Black Wind. Yara claims her right to rule after her father’s assassination, but when the Ironborn chooses her uncle Euron as king, she flees with Theon and loyal followers.

She allies with Daenerys Targaryen and later reclaims the Iron Islands, seeking to restore her family’s power. Yara participates in the Great Council, supporting Bran Stark as the new king.

In White House Farm, Whelan plays Ann Eaton, a family friend who grows suspicious of the official investigation into the murders. Ann, Jeremy Bamber’s maternal cousin, becomes one of the first to question his involvement in the killings.

Ann firmly believes Jeremy played a part in the murders. Her suspicions lead her to question Jeremy’s behavior, and she openly expresses her dislike of him.

Alfie Allen

Alfie Allen made his mark as Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. Theon’s arc shows his transformation from a loyal Stark ward to a broken man seeking salvation. The youngest son of King Balon Greyjoy of the Iron Islands, he lives as a ward to Lord Eddard Stark after his father’s failed rebellion. After Eddard’s execution, Theon initially pledges allegiance to Robb Stark but later helps his father to invade the North.

Theon’s decision leads him to capture Winterfell, only to be betrayed by his men and handed over to House Bolton. There, Ramsay Snow tortures him and reduces him to a shattered servant named Reek. Despite this, Theon finds his courage again, helping Sansa Stark escape Ramsay’s clutches. He eventually aids her in reclaiming Winterfell. With Sansa’s escape and Ramsay’s defeat, Theon begins to restore his former self.

In White House Farm, Allen plays Brett Collins, a friend of Jeremy Bamber. Collins maintains no direct connection to the murders, but he remains entangled in the case due to his friendship with Bamber. Despite supporting Bamber initially, Collins eventually distances himself. He described Bamber as having a “Jekyll and Hyde personality” and ultimately doubted his innocence.

Freddie Fox

Freddie Fox takes on the role of Gwayne Hightower in House of the Dragon. Gwayne is the eldest son of Ser Otto Hightower and brother to Alicent Hightower. He exhibits arrogance and sarcasm, particularly towards Criston Cole, despite Cole’s rise to the Hand of the King.

Gwayne excels as a leader in battle but remains conflicted by his family’s dynamics. Although he recognizes that Alicent is their father’s favorite, Gwayne doesn’t resent her. Instead, he cares deeply for his family and seeks to connect with his sister. Fox describes Gwayne as someone who becomes more compassionate as the realities of battle strip away his arrogance.

In White House Farm, Fox plays Jeremy Bamber, the central figure accused of the White House Farm murders. Fox’s portrayal of Bamber embodies a man capable of committing heinous crimes. In 1985, Bamber was convicted of murdering his adoptive parents, his adoptive sister, and her six-year-old twin sons. The prosecution argued that Bamber killed his family to secure a large inheritance. They said he staged the scene to look like a murder-suicide by placing the rifle in his schizophrenic sister’s hands. Despite Bamber’s multiple appeals and continuous attempts to overturn his conviction or reduce his whole life tariff, his family remains convinced of his guilt, and his conviction has been upheld by the courts. As of 2023, Bamber has spent 37 years in prison, making him one of the UK’s longest-serving prisoners.

Mark Stanley

Mark Stanley, portrayed Grenn, a loyal member of the Night’s Watch who fought alongside Jon Snow in Game of Thrones. Grenn, a strong but slow-witted ranger, displayed bravery and loyalty until his death defending the Wall. His character, abandoned by his father as a child, found camaraderie within The Night’s Watch and formed a close bond with Jon Snow.

In White House Farm, Stanley took on the role of Colin Caffell, the father of the two young victims. On the morning of August 7, 1985, Colin learned that his six-year-old twin sons had been shot dead at their grandparents’ farm in Tolleshunt D’Arcy. Alongside the boys, his ex-wife Sheila and her adoptive parents, Nevill and June Bamber, were also found dead. Initially, police believed Sheila, who struggled with mental health issues, had killed her family in a murder-suicide. However, Colin, devastated by the news, knew Sheila couldn’t have committed such an act. Despite her outbursts, she had always been loving towards her sons.

As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that Sheila’s brother, Jeremy Bamber, had orchestrated the murders to secure his inheritance. A year later, in 1986, he was convicted of the crime.
