Revisit the top moments from “Regent” in new stills from House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 5

House of the Dragon season 2 has exceeded all expectations. Rather than mindless twists and deaths, the show has continued the legacy of the mighty Game of Thrones series that put HBO on the map.

The latest episode from season 2 showcases a myriad of situations that are tough to face for both the Blacks and the Greens. Rhaenyra is left with a dent after Rhaenys’s death. Moreover, cracks are starting to form in the Green faction since Alicent feels helpless and suspects Aemond had something to do with Aegon II’s adverse condition.

Trust is becoming rarer and rarer even between people who are connected by blood. A lot is at stake and only a true expert can assess the situation beyond the battlefield and make smart decisions.

Alicent worries for Aegon II

No matter what one’s child does, a mother’s love seldom diminishes. Before Aegon II hastily rides out to war, his mother Alicent shares her two cents of advice with him. While it was great to see Alicent finally embrace her candor, it was arguably a bad time to instigate Aegon II as he was already agitated over being ignored.

Aegon II wanted love and comfort from his mother whereas what he received were some harsh words he wasn’t ready to hear, let alone imbibe. Now, as he has returned from war in a half-alive state, Alicent is worried over her eldest son’s condition and regrets saying what she did to him.

Daemon sees Laena in his vision

Daemon’s relationship with Laena Velaryon was not explored to the fullest. We got brief glimpses of their domestic life that they heartily enjoyed until Daemon sought the comfort of chaos in King’s Landing. He was doing well with his wife and daughters in Pentos. It all went south when he chose to go back and speak to Viserys.

Laena comes to Daemon in his vision to make him face his past mistakes and the errors of his ways. She killed herself by her own dragon’s fire since she could not face terrible labor pains. Moreover, the one person she expected to be there for her was not there.

Hugh and his family try to escape King’s Landing

Agitated over the lack of food and proper resources amidst the civil war, Hugh and his family decide to go away from King’s Landing. His daughter is extremely unwell and his wife urges him to take some action.

However, Aemond orders the guards to close the gates and not let anyone escape. This makes a dire situation worse as Hugh and his family have nowhere to go to protect themselves.

Aemond checks in on Aegon II

The question of whether Aemond decidedly burned Aegon II or he was just in the way is still up in the air. He was indeed frustrated to see Aegon II enter the battlefield when he specifically told him not to. Aemond delays his move by a couple of minutes to let his beloved brother get a taste of war. Eventually, when he comes to the scene, Aemond burns Aegon II and Rhaenys both, leaving viewers shocked.

Aegon II suffers severe burns across his body and his left in a deathly state. Even though the Maesters assure the Royal Family that he will live, his true condition is yet to be seen. Aemond comes in to see his brother in the flesh, but we see no regret or concern on his face. This scene truly marks a point in Aemond’s character development as he does not care about anyone other than himself.

Corlys is offered the Hand of the Queen position

Both his children are dead and now the war has claimed his wife too. Corlys is all alone in this world from hereon. Understanding that the Sea Snake needs a distraction at the moment, Rhaenyra asks Baela to give the broach of the Hand of the Queen to Corlys. This gives him a chance to get out of grief and work towards avenging his wife.

Baela says no to Driftmark

After Corlys offers to make her the heir of Driftmark, Baela confidently denies the proposition claiming she’s a Targaryen through and through. She believes Driftmark should go to people of the salt and sea rather than her who is all blood and fire.

Rhaenyra sends Ser Alfred to Harrenhal

After what happens in the Small Council meeting, Rhaenyra is left dazed at how many things she doesn’t know or doesn’t understand fully. She hoped her father had taught her the ways of war rather than making her hold cups. As the future Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, she has a duty towards her people to know how to fight for them and defend them.

Her one true ally who could have helped her has run away to Harrenhal after a spat. In House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5, Rhaenyra sends Ser Alfred to Harrenhal to learn Daemon’s true intentions. While Ser questions her true motives, Rhaenyra remains steadfast in her goal.

Aemond becomes the Regent King

The satisfaction on Aemond’s face says it all. Even if he did not intentionally try to kill Aegon II, he got what he wanted in the end. To rule the realm in the interim, the Small Council at the Green faction elects Aemond to be the Regent King. This comes as a slap on Alicent’s face as she offers to rule in Aegon II’s stead.

However, the members feel it appropriate for Aemond to take charge since the leader should know a thing or two about war tactics.

Lady Jeyne Arryn demands safety

We see Rhaena reach Vale in House of the Dragon season 2 episode 5. She reaches the land with two hatched dragons and two eggs that Rhaenyra asked her to keep safety. Here, she is greeted by the Lady of Vale who asks Rhaena if the Queen fulfilled her promise of protection.

The first interaction between the two ladies sets the tone for upcoming encounters and establishes that nothing comes for free in Westeros and every good deed demands a price to be paid.
