Valyrian Steel is a rare and powerful metal known for its ability to kill White Walkers. Originating from the ancient city of Valyria, this metal has been forged into weapons of legendary status in Westeros. The Valyrian Steel Catspaw Dagger played a crucial role in defeating the Night King in Game of Thrones.

Several great houses still possess Valyrian steel weapons, and as seen in House of the Dragon Season 2, Aegon II even has a full set of Valyrian Steel armor. Here, we explore some of the iconic Valyrian steel swords that existed during the Dance of the Dragons and which may appear in House of the Dragon.

Dark Sister is one of the most legendary Valyrian steel swords in Westeros. Originally wielded by Visenya, the sister-wife of Aegon the Conqueror, it has been passed down through many famous Targaryens, including Prince Aemon the Dragonknight and Brynden “Bloodraven” Rivers.

In House of the Dragon, Dark Sister is in the possession of Prince Daemon Targaryen. Daemon used Dark Sister in many battles, including the Battle Above the Gods Eye, where he fought against Aemond Targaryen, plunging Dark Sister into Aemond’s eye.

Nightfall is a Valyrian steel longsword that belongs to House Harlaw. This sword, with its moonstone pommel, is currently wielded by Ser Harras Harlaw in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels. Nightfall has seen many battles, and Ser Harras has used it to achieve several victories. How the sword came into the possession of House Harlaw is a mystery.

Lord Dalton Greyjoy, known as the Red Kraken, originally possessed this sword, taking it from a dead corsair. Lord Dalton has been mentioned several times in House of the Dragon. He was an important character in Fire and Blood, burning the Westerlands and the lands of Lord Jason Lannister and his wife Lady Johanna. We could possibly see him appear in Season 3 wielding Nightfall.

Lady Forlorn is the ancestral Valyrian steel sword of House Corbray. Passed down through generations, Lady Forlorn has a heart-shaped ruby in its pommel and is known for its smoke-grey blade. The sword has a long history, having been used in many significant battles, including the Battle of the Seven Stars.

It has been wielded by numerous members of House Corbray and has played a crucial role in the family’s legacy. Ser Corwyn Corbray wielded Lady Forlorn during the Dance of the Dragons. In Fire and Blood, Rhaena Targaryen fell in love with Ser Corwyn, and thus we may see him and the sword Lady Forlorn in House of the Dragon.

Longclaw

Longclaw is a Valyrian steel bastard sword that was the ancestral weapon of House Mormont for five centuries. It was passed to Jon Snow by Jeor Mormont as a reward for saving his life from a wight. Before giving it to Jon, the pommel was remade to feature a direwolf, the sigil of House Stark.

Longclaw played a significant role in Jon’s journey, especially during the battles against the White Walkers. Bear Island is in the North under Winterfell’s jurisdiction. The only Northmen who participate in the Dance are Cregan Stark’s greybeards, the Winter Wolves. Due to this, it is uncertain if Longclaw will appear in House of the Dragon, but its iconic status makes it a possibility.

Red Rain

Red Rain is another Valyrian steel sword, belonging to House Drumm. The sword was taken by Hilmar Drumm, known as “Hilmar the Cunning,” from an armored knight using only a wooden cudgel. This event added to the sword’s legend, making it a prized possession of House Drumm. Some believe Red Rain once belonged to House Reyne, whose sigil is a red lion.

House Reyne was famously wiped out by Tywin Lannister, and the song ‘The Rains of Castamere’ was written about them. During the Dance of the Dragons, House Reyne still existed. One of the members of this House, Martin Reyne, is Aegon’s drinking buddy and later a member of his Kingsguard. We may yet see Red Rain appear in the possession of a member of this House in House of the Dragon.
