Fans react to George R.R. Martin’s comments on House of the Dragon’s changes from source material
Fans also want the author to complete Winds of Winter
The reception of House of the Dragon Season 2 has been more muted than its first season, primarily because of substantial changes from George R. R. Martin‘s book, Fire & Blood, which Martin has publicly criticized. Despite valid reasons for dissatisfaction from him and the fans, HBO maintains its stance on the creative direction of the Game of Thrones prequel.
A summary of George R. R. Martin and House of the Dragon’s fiasco
The initial season was a resounding success, leading Martin and HBO to celebrate at the premiere, confident in the adaptation’s triumph. Yet, the reception shifted with the arrival of Season 2.
As fans voiced their concerns over numerous inaccuracies in the second season, Martin echoed their sentiments, declaring his intention to highlight these issues personally in a compelling post.
In a detailed post, which has since been removed, the author of Fire & Blood openly criticized how Condal and HBO eliminated characters to reduce costs, and indicated that further alterations were anticipated.

Fans want to avoid another Game of Thrones Season 8 mishap
Martin’s post confirmed fans’ long-standing suspicions, and a lot of them expressed their concerns going forward with House of the Dragon and other Game of Thrones spinoffs. Some of them took to X and said:
I’m pretty quick to call out GRRM’s slow pace but Im on his side for calling out poor writing (can’t have another season 8 again) pic.twitter.com/vZ83D0by11

George R.R. Martin quickly took down his blog post criticizing House of the Dragon season 2 as HBO released a statement addressing the situation. What happened? #GRRM #HOTD
Who cares about HOTD? finish writing 'The Winds Of Winter' Martin. https://t.co/jwYFBSDnDT— Shipper of ASOIAF JonArya + Helo & Athena (@TVyMovies) September 6, 2024
George R. R Martin disapproving of desicions about HOTD that he approved of is making me think he just wanted to find a way to write a long ass blog post instead of the winds of winter
