The Muppet Tullys seem to have been removed from House of the Dragon
One of George R.R. Martin’s humorous references may be removed.
In the latest episode of House of the Dragon, fans were introduced to Oscar Tully, Grover Tully’s grandson and the new heir to the Riverlands. This marks a significant change from the books, where Oscar’s father, Elmo, and older brother, Kermit, preceded him in the Tully line of succession. George R.R. Martin specifically named them after characters appearing in Sesame Street, a.k.a The Muppets. However, it seems as though House of the Dragon has excluded them.

The Muppet Tullys won’t appear in House of the Dragon
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Oscar Tully is the great-grandson of Lord Grover Tully. He is the second son of Elmo and the younger brother of Kermit. Described as having red hair, Oscar is prideful and determined to become a warrior. His older brother Kermit is just a “green boy,” with Oscar being even greener. This playful nod to Sesame Street characters added a whimsical touch to the otherwise serious narrative of Westeros.
In the show, based on the line of succession, we can assume that Elmo, Kermit, and Oscar have been merged into a single character named Oscar Tully, simplifying the storyline. This choice streamlines the narrative, preventing it from becoming bogged down with too many characters and backstories. While this move aids in maintaining the show’s serious tone, it does mean that some of the light-hearted elements from the books are lost.

Who was Elmo Tully?
Elmo Tully was the Lord of Riverrun and head of House Tully during the Dance of the Dragons. He succeeded his grandfather, Lord Grover Tully, but died only forty-nine days later. Elmo was known as a reluctant and practical warrior. At the beginning of the Dance of the Dragons, Grover Tully wanted to support King Aegon II Targaryen and the Greens. However, Elmo kept the Tully banners at Riverrun, fearing the dragons on both sides.
Grover was too old and sick to oppose him. Eventually, the Tullys supported Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen after Ser Addam Velaryon visited Riverrun on his dragon, Seasmoke. Elmo led the riverlords to victory at the Second Battle of Tumbleton.
Grover died soon after, making Elmo the new Lord of Riverrun. When Lord Borros Baratheon attacked Rhaenyra’s loyalists, Elmo gathered an army and marched towards King’s Landing. However, he died from drinking bad water, and his son, Ser Kermit Tully, succeeded him.
Who was Kermit Tully?
Kermit Tully became the Lord of Riverrun and led the riverlords to victory against the Baratheon host. He had red hair and used a Morningstar in battle. Archmaester Gyldayn noted that Kermit and his brother, Oscar, were proud and eager to prove themselves. Kermit brought House Tully to its peak.
During the Dance of the Dragons, Kermit led the Tullys to support Queen Rhaenyra and her son, Prince Aegon the Younger. At the Battle of the Kingsroad, Kermit defeated and killed Lord Borros Baratheon. After the war, he supported King Aegon III but deferred to Lord Stark when he arrived in King’s Landing. Kermit thought it unwise to continue the war but eventually agreed to join the Stark host. He was briefly considered for the Hand of the King but was rejected due to his youth.
