House of The Dragon Episode 9 stills foreshadow a grim fate for Lord Lyman Beesbury
Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon is steadily moving towards its finale, with episode 8 premiering earlier today. It was the biggest episode of the series by far, at least in season 1, both in terms of the runtime and the impact it had on the storyline. A lot happened in the most recent chapter of the TV adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s work, from all the characters growing up to their final form that will continue till the end of the series to King Viserys finally dying and in turn giving way to the fated civil war. The preview to episode 9 is here, and things are not looking too good in Westeros.
The preview shows the Greens taking over King’s Landing after Viserys’ death. Alicent, firm in her belief that Viserys finally changed his mind and emboldened by allies like Criston Cole, Larys Strong, and her father, Otto Hightower, prepares her eldest son Aegon for succession. However, her path won’t be easy, and she will be facing strong opposition in the small council.
We see an intense debate taking place in the meeting of the small council, with Lord Lyman Beesbury, played by Bill Paterson, seems to be siding with the Blacks and questioning the underhanded tactics of the Greens. The shot quickly changes to the next with the sounds of swords unsheathing, a bit of clever foreshadowing of his fate. In the new pictures released by HBO, we see Ser Criston Cole staring at Beesbury in disgust, another indication of who would be doing the deed.
In Fire & Blood, the details are rather muddy about what happened to the old master of coins, however, we do know that he is made to disappear from the scene before the Dance of the Dragon. According to Grand Maester Orwyle, who was present in the chamber, Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, had Lyman arrested and sent to the black cells, where he eventually died of a chill.
In contrast, Septon Eustace claimed that Ser Criston Cole, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, slit Lyman’s throat with his dagger. Court fool Mushroom alleges that Criston instead tossed Lyman from the window onto the spikes of the Maegor’s Holdfast’s moat. Eustace and Mushroom were not present, however. Lyman was succeeded as master of coin by Ser Tyland Lannister.
