When and how does Tywin Lannister die?

Game of Thrones had a myriad of characters. Each was a different shade of grey, providing fans with a huge number of choices. Tywin Lannister was perhaps the most remarkable of characters on Game of Thrones. Even as a villain, fans respected him. His presence on-screen portrayed boldness and command, and he was a true lion of House Lannister.

However, despite all the military and political achievements of his career, Tywin Lannister died quite an unceremonious death. His death is still one of the most talked about scenes of Game of Thrones, signifying how even the high and mighty might not be as untouchable as they might think.

Who was Tywin Lannister?

Born in 242 AD, Lord Tywin Lannister held several important positions throughout the Realm’s history, including Lord of Casterly Rock, Protector of the Realm, Warden of the West, and Hand of the King under three distinct monarchs. Tyrion, Jaime, and Cersei Lannister were his children. Jaime was his absolute pride, though he was annoyed at him for joining the Kingsguard. He gave little importance to Cersei, and absolutely hated Tyrion.

How did Tywin Lannister die?

After Tyrion’s trial by combat, which he loses as his champion Oberyn Martell dies, he is sentenced to death by his father, Tywin Lannister. However, on the eve before his execution, his brother Jaime helps him escape. He goes to his father’s chambers, where he finds his former lover, Shae, in his bed. This enrages him and he strangles her after asking why she betrayed her.

Then he goes to find Tywin in his lavatory, and holds him against a crossbow. The two engage in a heated argument, when Tywin confesses he wished Tyrion had died at his birth, but he admired his resilience. He tries to convince his son by telling him that he did not intend to kill him, but ultimately send him to the wall. However, Tyrion loses his temper when Tywin mocks his choice of lovers, and calls Shae a whore. He shoots his father with an arrow in his stomach, after which Tywin shouts at him saying:

“You’re no son of mine.”

Tyrion then says he was, and always had been his son, and goes on to shoot him with another arrow in the heart. Tywin’s lifeless body is found the next day in the same position, and an alarm is raised about Tyrion’s escape. However, he had already gotten away with the help of Varys.

Is Tywin Lannister in House of the Dragon?

Tywin Lannister wasn’t born during the time of Dance of the Dragons, the event from Fire and Blood House of the Dragon is based on. The prequel is set 200 years before Game of Thrones, hence Tywin won’t be there in House of the Dragon.
