Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa shares pictures from his upcoming sci-fi film ‘Dune’
Coronavirus lockdowns have forced us into our homes. But this has been a time of reflection and discovery for us as individuals as well as a society. Amidst growing concern for the health of our fellow people, once in a while, we receive an update that makes us excited for the future. Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa has just shared one such development. It’s a peek into his upcoming sci-fi film, Dune, slated to release on December 18, 2020. And it looks like a breathtaking adventure.
Jason shared quite a few pictures on his Instagram, introducing us to the many characters of the film. Vanity Fair originally released the photos offering an inside look at the one of a kind story. “Honored to be a part of Denis Villeneuve’s new film Dune. I play Duncan Idaho – What Denis has created is pretty damn special,” Jason wrote. Check out all the pictures in his post, below:
The director, Denis Villeneuve has adapted Frank Herbert’s famous science fiction novel, Dune, published in 1965. Denis has earlier directed other sci-fi films like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.
Momoa further wrote warm words for the team of the film. “Much love to the cast and crew that I got to work with on this project. Excited for this one.” The story is a battle for control over the desert-wasteland planet, Arrakis. Not for the planet itself, but due to a valuable resource that’s mined from here; melange or “the spice”. It’s a drug that gives immense abilities to the mind which enables space travel and prolonged life. But the dusty catch lies in the fact that the planet is inhospitable to life, and “the spice” is protected by giant sandworms. House Atreides faces imminent danger from the House Harkonnen who are political rivals. Hence, it’s a coming-of-age tale with strong political, religious, and ecological undertones; it’s said to have set the stage for modern blockbusters like Star Wars and Game of Thrones.
Dune has a stellar cast set in an interstellar backdrop. Timothée Chalamet stars as Paul, a young man who is the heir to House Atreides. Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Paul’s parents. Jason Momoa plays Duncan Idaho and Josh Brolin plays Gurney Halleck, both of whom are warriors defending and training Paul. Sharon Duncan-Brewster plays Dr. Liet Kynes, an ecologist from Arrakis. Stellan Skarsgård is Baron Vladimir, the leader of House Harkonnen. Javier Bardem and Zendaya play Stilgar and Chani, members of the native Fremen tribe of Arrakis. Dave Bautista stars as Glossu Rabban, a cruel Harkonnen loyal. We hope the fans of the novel would easily identify the characters.
Many people have made attempts at adapting Dune for the big and small screen; albeit they haven’t really been successful. Produced by WarnerBros, the latest film will only cover half of the novel and the next half will be told in a second movie. It seems to be a good strategy to tackle a narrative as complex as Dune. We wish the team well and hope to see a spectacle. Moreover, we can’t help but notice the exciting work that Jason Momoa’s doing lately.
