House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s fictional history book, Fire and Blood. In the book, Jacaerys and Baela are betrothed but never get the chance to marry. In House of the Dragon Season 1, we already saw Rhaenyra and Rhaenys betrothed Jacaerys and Lucerys to Baela and Rhaena. Jacaerys then departed to the North to meet Lord Cregan Stark and recruit his forces for the Blacks.
Baela Targaryen was eager to join the war efforts in the books but was forbidden. From trailers, we know that she will, indeed, join the war next season. However, her betrothal with Jacaerys was complicated.
According to some accounts, Jacaerys married Lord Cregan’s half-sister, Sara Snow, forming the Pact of Ice and Fire to recruit his forces for the Blacks. He also promised that a princess of the Targaryen dynasty would be married into House Stark, sealing the pact.
Other accounts in Fire and Blood say Sara Snow never existed or Jacaerys would never marry a baseborn woman while betrothed to Princess Baela. Whether or not we will see Sara Snow in the upcoming series is still unknown. However, based on the changes made from the source material, we may see Jacaerys and Baela married in Season 1 as a precursor for what will follow in Season 2.
