The stars of Game of Thrones are very popular, and we have seen them be good citizens. They have constantly used their fame to get their fans to pay attention to some really important issues, right from Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) against Dolphins shows, to Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) about refugees. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays the role of Jaime Lannister, has been a climate change advocate, and he recently spoke about how he wants people to get real about it. Read on!
Nikolaj is a United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador and passionate advocate for climate action. Speaking at Mashable‘s 2017 Social Good Summit, he talked about how climate change needs to be taken care of, and how it relates to Game of Thrones.
Speaking to Mashable’s Executive Editor, Jessica Coen, he said :
“I don’t know if George R.R. Martin thought of it when he started writing this 20 years ago but it’s quite obvious that we’re facing a threat maybe even graver than the White Walkers.”
Apparently his wife saw the effects of climate change on her visit to her home in Greenland, where the ice has been melting away :
“She was back a few years ago and she called me and was actually in tears. She said, ‘There’s no ice.’ So, of course, it changes a way of life. If we don’t deal with climate change, all bets are off. It’s up to each and every one of us to make an impact.”
He also spoke with Billboard about the same topic and this is what he had to say:
“You’d have to ask George R.R. Martin. It’s very easy to look at it that way. I don’t think it was necessarily intended like that, but the parallels are you have a world where you’re trying to get all of the powerful houses, all of the countries, to get together to fight this enormous enemy and the most powerful house says ‘Yes I’m going to do this’ and then suddenly decides not to. You can easily draw parallels”
“But the truth is that reality is always much more extreme than fiction. We couldn’t make up what’s happening now. Our species, we’ve been so successful. We’re almost 7 and a half billion. By 2030 we’ll be 8 and a half billion people. It’s like, wow, we did really well. The irony is we’re about to destroy all of this. We think we’re invincible. If we go above 2.5 degrees, it’s going to end in tears.”
