Daemon Targaryen, a complex and troubled character in House of the Dragon, has a past that continues to haunt him in more ways than one. His complicated history with Aemond Targaryen, his nephew, has left emotional scars that still linger. As Daemon navigates the treacherous landscape of Westeros, he must confront the ghosts of his own making. Daemon’s demons, including his past and struggles, and Matt Smith’s portrayal of Daemon’s vulnerability, complete with a subtle soft pout, perfectly captures the complexity of their relationship.

Daemon sees himself dressed as Aemond in dreams

The moment when Daemon sees himself dressed as Aemond in dreams at Harrenhal is a striking representation of their twisted connection.  The fact that Aemond idolizes Daemon, mirroring his actions and embodying his qualities adds depth to their dynamic. Ewan Mitchell gives his take in an interview with Business Insider,

“I think he did like a little soft pout in that moment when he turns around over his shoulder. I was like, “Yeah, he nailed that. What’s that saying? Never meet your heroes, kind of thing. If Aemond met his, it wouldn’t be pretty for Daemon.Aemond lives in Daemon’s head rent-free as well. You see that in Harrenhal when Daemon’s chasing Aemond. I think that’s definitely something that Aemond would want to be living in Daemon’s head rent-free.”

Eerie similarities between Daemon and Aemond

Aemond embodies a distorted version of Daemon’s qualities. Their names being anagrams of each other, symbolize their interconnectedness. Aemond idolizes Daemon, putting him on a pedestal and emulating his actions. Aemond’s idolization has turned into an unhealthy obsession, causing tension and conflict.

“The parallels between these two characters, their names are anagrams of each other, and the relationship and the platform that Aemond puts Daemon on — the fact that he idolizes him — so much of what Aemond embodies, it’s in homage to his hero.”
