House of The Dragon showrunner says Viserys’ 8-episode storyline made his arc stronger

Paddy Considine left a huge impact with his performance as King Viserys Targaryen on the viewers of House of the Dragon, and rightfully so. He gave so much new depth and meaning to the character of King Viserys that even author George R.R. Martin admitted that Considine’s version was better than what he had originally written in Fire & Blood. Showrunner Ryan Condal recently explained what made Viserys’ story so much better than the book.

Ryan Condal says 8 episodes were enough to make his story arc stronger

In a recent interview with Deadline, Condal explained, “I’m glad they didn’t drag Viserys out. The fact it was put into eight episodes, it just made his arc all that stronger.”

“The trick was really to show this generational conflict that began with Viserys’ generation,” Condal said. “He and Otto Hightower, his hand, passed down to Rhaenyra and Alicent as they grew up and became adults and had children of their own. This bitter rivalry grasping for power gets passed onto their children. It’s a three generational story and we needed to get through that in one season so we could get on to the Dance of the Dragons.”

In an exclusive interview with Sky Atlantic, Condal said, “House of the Dragon has returned. We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favourite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.”
