Interview
George R.R. Martin once toyed with the idea of making the Velaryons a House of Black nobles in Fire & Blood

Game of Thrones writer George R. R. Martin is one of the most accomplished novelists today, with some of the best-selling books under his belt. The veteran author is already associated with a bunch of new shows, including Game of Thrones prequel House of The Dragon. House of the Dragon is an adaptation of an infamous event from his book ‘Fire & Blood’, a civil war known as ‘The Dance of The Dragons’. While writing the novel, he was playing around with a lot of ideas, some of which he never used.
House of The Dragon’s showrunner Ryan Condal has been a big fan of Martin’s work, and has been in contact with the author even before his Game of Thrones days. Condal has read all of his books, and Martin is quite confident he’ll do a great job with the Game of Thrones prequel. Condal recently talked to Entertainment Weekly and revealed Martin initially had plans to make House Velaryon a family of black nobles, an idea that he implemented in the upcoming TV series.
Condal said, “Long, long ago when he was conceiving of this world, [Martin] himself had considered the idea of making Velaryons a race of Black people with silver hair that essentially came from the other side of the ocean and conquered Westeros. That’s a fascinating idea and that always really stuck with me because it’s such a stark image. I just thought, ‘Well, why couldn’t we do a version of that now?'”
