George R. R. Martin says he hated Cheese even more after he kicked the dog
The dog with Blood and Cheese added life to the arc.

One phenomenal aspect for fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon fans is how involved the author of the source material is in the production of these shows. George R.R. Martin frequently pens his thoughts and views on the ongoing shows. He’s not afraid to point out things he doesn’t like either.
Martin’s blogosphere is a place where he can be candid about his views and ensure his unfiltered thoughts reach his audience. His latest Not a Blog talks about the first few episodes of House of the Dragon Season 2 that are already taking the internet by storm.

George R. R. Martin wishes he had thought of adding a dog to the Blood and Cheese arc

Cheese and his dog | Max
The Blood and Cheese storyline in House of the Dragon Season 2 was one of the most awaited arcs out of the entire Fire and Blood book. Fierce, intense, and revenge-driven, the arc condenses all major aspects of the House Targaryen and the show overall. George R.R. Martin expressed his appreciation for all the actors in the show. Moreover, one thing he wishes he thought of instead of the showrunners is adding the pet dog to the Blood and Cheese storyline.
“I am… ahem… not usually a fan of screenwriters adding characters to the source material when adapting a story. Especially not when the source material is mine. But that dog was brilliant. I was prepared to hate Cheese, but I hated him even more when he kicked that dog. And later, when the dog say at his feet, gazing up… that damn near broke my heart. Such a little thing… such a little dog… but his presence, the few short moments he was on screen, gave the ratcatcher so much humanity. Human beings are such complex creatures. The silent presence of that dog reminded us that even the worst of men, the vile and the venal, can love and be loved. I wish I’d thought of that dog, I didn’t, but someone else did. I am glad of that.”
We all knew we were going to hate Blood and Cheese for their merciless assassination. However, the one scene where Cheese kicked the innocent dog pushed our hatred over the edge. The heartbreaking scene caused major outrage among fans who despise animal cruelty. In the next episode, the dog is again seen when Cheese is hung for his crimes by the Crown. This further leaves a lasting impact on fans.
